Loft of a 1-iron

For those of you who have a 1-iron, what is the loft?

Just curious to see how low they go and what the most common loft seems to be.

Well the TM 1 Iron UDI is 16*. I had an MP14 1 iron and it was 17*

Eye 2 1-iron is 16*

My Golden Ram 1 iron is 17°.

The 1 iron is largely phased out by loft creep. The 2 iron moved into that loft slot as irons got stronger in the 90s, and now the 3 iron is in that loft range.

If it kept getting stronger as the other irons did, it would be close to 3 wood loft by now.

Old nike forged blade iron I had was 16.5 degrees.

Hogan blade redline is 17 degrees.

No doubt it. I think that historically, 3W were about the same loft as a 1 -iron (i.e., 16-17*). Nowadays 3W have gotten fairly strong lofted and are actually starting to become driver replacements since no one can hit the 10* drivers. Think about the threads we see on people contemplating dropping their drivers and using a large head strong lofted 3W. A 42 inch 14* "strong 3W" is a good fit for lot of golfers who can't hit their 45 inch 10.5.* drivers.

Anyway, back on topic, it looks like 16* is about as low you might go on a 1-iron based on the replies so far. 17* seems to be common.

I have a Tommy Armour Heater I pull out for fun sometimes. It is more of a zero iron though (14º). Otherwise, my 2 iron is 18º so there really is no point to having a 1 iron in the bag. One irons are fun though. I have been on the lookout for some old forged ones.

I think the old standard for 1 irons was 17º, but I have seen specs on some PING 1 irons as low as 15.5º.

Classic Ping 1 Irons were 15 or 16 degrees.
