Anybody else finding wrong gps info with Skycaddie?

Recommended Posts

So I've had a skycaddie and rangefinder both for 4 months now, courtesy of surprise gifts from different people. And I like them both. But I like the rangefinder better. I'm finding some flat out wrong info on the skycaddie. There is a 4 star course near me that I play frequently. On one par 3, every time I play it, the front and back of the green both show the exact same yardages. On another 4 star course near me, they made some significant changes in layout of a couple of the holes two years ago, and the skycaddie still has the old layout. These are supposedly courses that were "mapped by skycaddie professionals". Fortunately, the errors are so obvious, no one would use them to select a club because your eyes tell you the yardages are wrong. Is anybody else seeing these errors on the courses they play?

My friend got one of the new skycaddie models for Xmas. He has a Bushnell 1500 pinseeker. The skycaddie gives "Bogus" info in many cases. The Pinseeker is very accurate always.

If you use both, you can very quickly get front and back of green plus pin. Takes maybe 10-15 seconds. When the green is in full view then front and back of green is not that important. But if the green is elevated or there is a hazard just in front, then it is nice to know.

I just don't like that the skycaddie can be wrong even one hole out of 18. I'm not talking tolerances of gps devices, I'm talking it is flat mapped wrong by whoever did it. Seems like for 4 star courses, their quality control would be better.

I was thinking about this scenario, the other weekend.

The committte at our country club, just voted to alter a few holes, and adjust the bunkers and maybe skew a couple of the greens. But this would significantly change the yardages, or on how a player would attack/approach the hole.

After the meeting, I made fun of my buddie, because he has a skycaddie (and yes, it comes in handy), whereas I use a rangefinder.

But we were wondering, whose supposed to let the folks over at Skycaddie, know that the course will be changing soon? Not that it's the CC's responsibility to notify Skycaddie of a course change. Just one of those things we wondered about.

You can map your own course, if you play it all the time, and perhaps do a better job of it. But I don't know if you can add hazards, you would have to check that out, it may be just the greens only that you can map yourself. I was looking on the skycaddie website for feedback. There is no real place for it. I did find where you can "request a course". Perhaps that could include a request for re-mapping.

This is such a great tool, it is too bad that skycaddie is not a little better at the service aspect.

I have been using my SG5 for 3 months. Played 7 courses in 3 states. So far, everything has been spot on in terms of accuracy. Regarding course modifications, I was wondering the same thing - how long does it take SkyCaddie to update a course? Would be interesting to see if anyone here knows the answer to that.

I just ordered a SG5 (Amex Points). I was told by a fellow club member who has the SG4 that the yardage is the same as our course markers give or take a yard or two. I really don't mind a yard or two. I chose it over a Pinseeker 1500. I just did not want to look through that monocular. I could see myself wanting to measure everything from the green and traps to how far away the girl in the beer cart is. Spot scoping everything and then puting it away safely just seems like it would slow play not speed it up. I do love the idea of accuracy within a 2 foot margine of error. I just would much rather give the screen a quick glance and go hit. However, if I find that the thing is not accurate it will be gone and I WILL be spot scoping everthing in sight including the beer girl.

Not an issue, I play with golfers with SG2 and pinseekers and we're always within a yard or two all around within the foursome, especially on the tees and money on the line. On occasion, I am pretty sure they misread their pinseekers or didn't take into account the flag placement so they were off but i've always been spot on with mine. BOOM! I'm on and they're past the hole and over. No disappointment yet within my SG3.

Are there course mistakes - SURE. Nothing is perfect but I know the course enough and trust what SG3 is telling me.

Since "skycaddie professionals" (probably paid contractors) are mapping the 4 star courses, I wonder if the quality varies depending on where you live. I imagine some of the people doing this work are really good and take pride in it, while others are just looking for a paycheck. That might explain why I found severe mapping mistakes on 2 of the 4 courses I have played in NE Georgia. The same person likely did the work.

I had the SG2 and now have the SG5 and NEVER had a problem, you can request a re map or "map" a course from them, if you play the course walk it and map it yourself and store it in "course I mapped" I think you can store 5 courses.

How do you request a remap? Where on the website is this option? I want to request this for 2 of the 4 courses I have played with my SG3.

I've been using the SkyCaddie SG3 since September, and have had no problems with it. I've played probably about 10 different courses.

On courses where there is GPS in the cart my SG3 matched right up. Last weekend I played with a friend who uses a range finder (no idea the brand or model), but we were always with a yard or two of each other.

my club alter some of the greens and all we did is call the company and they came out within a couple of weeks! If your pro sells the skycaddie i would think he would call....

you have a couple of bad yardages that appear to be mapped wrong? just call them and they will take care of it quickly. 1-866-skygolf

hope this helps!

I completed an online form at their website about the two courses I played with mapping mistakes on some holes. I listed the course names and the holes that were incorrect. These are 4 star courses. Here is a part of the reply message I received from them today:

"Thank you for contacting us. Currently, the course in question is not part of our course library. To submit suggestions for SkyCourses to our enablers, you may fill out our online form at:"

From what I can see, these guys are asleep at the wheel.

It is in the Club's best interest to contact their sales rep for Sky Golf. The clubs benefit directly from the sales through there shop, so they want an accurate product. Have your Pro call the Sky Golf Rep and the problem is solved! ;)

I have the SG 2.5 and find it to be incredibly useful and accurate.

That s*cks that you find some courses mismapped although, it's rare than norm, IMO. As far as the 8 courses i've played here in the San Fernando Valley, CA, it's been damn damn close and my foursome has pinseekers. Not a huge issues imo but yeah, customer service could be better - as with any company.

Many of the courses I play do not have that elaborate of a pro shop and don't sell the sky caddie. I don't know what percentage of actual golf courses have on site sales of this product. But it's got to be fairly small, maybe ten percent or twenty percent max?
