1. Stretch for 5 min or so

2. hit normal 8 irons (i use freddy couples advice stating that if he hits soft little wedges first it throws off his rhythm.)

3. once i'm loose i'll hit 4-5 balls with each club working on distance control and accuracy

4. from there play a few simulated holes in my head and finish with areas that need more work.

5. after the range chip and put for 15 min. or so

It depends if I have a specific goal in mind or not. If I want to work on ball striking I will work on that and almost nothing else... etc.. If I am trying to get warmed up before a round I start with a favorite club (7 iron) and make some good swings to bring up my confidence and I always practice my pre-shot routine. On normal practice days it helps if I have a goal. If I have something I know I want to work on it doesn't help to skip around. If I am feeling inconsistent with my irons I won't pull a wood out until I am sure I have accomplished what I need to with the irons. Almost every practice session ends on the putting green. Although it may be the strongest part of my game I still putt as much as possible.

great question

First there is a difference between practice and warm up

When I was younger I always warmed up short irons to driver

The best I ever played I commited to hitting nothing but driver five iron and wedges when I practiced

Now days (I will be 59 tomorrow) I work so I never get to practice so that I can not discuss

When I play I always try to warm up. I stretch every morning before I leave the house

But when I get to the course I have found hitting some five woods really smooth loosens me up faster than anything

My routine about ten five woods

seven irons about five or six

five irons three to five

Driver as little as three sometimes six or seven

I usually finish the session hitting my 55 wedge different distances

I then go putt and chip

If I have a moment or too as I head to the tee I might hit a couple of balls with a three or five wood which is the play on one tee

Get to the range and just get loose. Dont care where the ball goes hitting 54 degree wedges usually about 10. Then I move onto a 7 iron where I will hit the bulk of my balls just trying to get the feel down. Then Ill usually hit a few hybrids and then about 5 drivers. I always end with whatever club I will hit off the first tee.

get to the range and do some light stretching

hit some soft 100 yard pitching wedge shots just to loosen up

hit normal shots starting with the pitching wedge then moving down my bag with the evens or odds depending on how I feel

move back up and do the same with whichever I didnt hit at first

hit woods and wedges in no order just to kind of not get to used to one thing and provide some extremes in shot variation

putt and chip for as long as I can

Actually practicing, on the range I just hit a wedge, a short iron and a wood and just try and groove my swing and get the tempo down, which is my greatest downfall. Short game I have a shag bag of about 20 scuffed ProV's and just hit them around the practice green with one specific club for a couple hours, or else I'll use 1 ball and try and get up and down from different scenarios around the green

When i warm up i follow tigers routine (a few slight differences)

chip for a little bit to get some feel and confidence

start with smooth pitching wedge shots

move to a mid-iron (8) for most of my shots

then hit a few long irons(if im doing good ill hit 3iron or if not a 4iron)

then to a 5 or 3 wood

some drivers

then what ever i will hit on the first tee

i will close on the range with a few short wedge shots

then back to the putting green until it is time to tee off

It will take me about the same amount of time each time (about 45 minutes unless i am focusing extra on one aspect)

Practice days

i will do about the same thing but will take more time on each aspect and hit a wider variety of clubs (so i dont wear too much out of a few clubs and not others ie. ill hit 7s or 6s instead of 8s) depending what i am feeling like or working on

Pre-round

Get the feel for the greens to see how hard or soft they are with some pitches and chips, then move to the range and get loose with a pw. Then move up till I get to my Driver. After that I play the hole I will be starting on over and over(simulated)until I feel content. Then I go to the Practice Green to hit some lag putts. Then the last thing I do is nail some 3-5 footers to gain confidence. Then head to the tee.

if its a tournament round, i usually like to get there about an hour and fifteen minutes before my tee time. from there i go to the putting green first, hit some mid-length putts just to get my tempo down, then i start to drill with the two tees in the ground that act like the gates. i usually have to make 10 in a row with both hands, 10 in a row with just my right, and 10 more with both... if i miss one of the ten batches, i have to restart those ten. the ten that i do with just my right hand establishes my hand dominance. all this only takes about 20 minutes. from there i go to the range for about 30-35 minutes. before i hit anything i make sure i stretch until i feel loose. i usually start off with some half wedges with my 54* wedge then work into full swings with my 8 iron, then 6, then my 4 iron, and finall my driver.. i just have to make sure that everything feels right. after i finish up at the range i head back to the green and get a feel for the speed of the greens.

and non practice days, i just have to have a goal in mind, or something that im workin on, and i usually wont stop till i feel i accomplished my goal or i progessed.

sorry for the long post...

my practice routine and my routine when i warm up before playing a round aren't really that different. the only difference is that when i'm practicing, i usually am working on something specific after i've had my warm up swings and hit some balls to warm up, whereas when i hit balls before a round it's pretty much only to warm up, i'm not really paying attention to how far i'm hitting it or anything like that, at least not until the very end of my routine when i'm fully warmed up. but mostly it's just concentrating on getting lots of solid contact, nice tempo, and stretching out. usually hit around 125 balls (one large bucket) in this order(which i stole from tiger woods, who "stole" it from jack nicklaus):

sand wedge (all full shots, just like what one person said about what freddy couples said about half shots messing up your rhythm)

8 iron (mostly draws, then i'll hit a few fades just to mix it up)

4 hybrid

2 hybrid (i don't carry fairway woods)

driver

8 iron

lob wedge (half full shots, then othe half 3/4 and half shots)

then whatever i'll hit on the first hole

and then just for kicks, if it's a course that i usually play at, i'll hit the club that i know i'll be hitting the most during my round. one of the courses around here is a shorter course, with majority of the par 4s being driver/wedge, or 9 iron, so i'll hit a good amount of wedge shots, with all of my wedges, both full and punch shots. that usually finishes up my bucket, and then i'll head over to the putting green and hit about 20 5 ft. putts to get some confidence, then i'll move back to 25-30 ft. putts to practice lag putting, and then i'm usually ready to go. whole thing usually takes about an hour and a half

I start out with my Lob or Sandwedge. Then I go to my 8 or 9 iron. From there go to the 6 or 7. Then I jump to my 3 iron. After that I go to a fairway wood. Then I jump to my driver. After that and I feel I have grooved my swing pretty well I close my eyes and put my hand on my bag. What ever club I have my hand on I hit. Each hit I pretend it's an actual shot to the green and go through my whole preshot routine. I do this three times. Once for a straight shot, then for a nice fade, then for a nice draw.
