I saw Sky Golf out re-maping a course today

I was playing The Traditions Golf Club at Stonehouse in Toano, VA today and saw a lady out riding around in a cart with a GPS unit on her back. She would get out and walk up to a target, stand for a second, then move on. I also saw her walking the green perimeter on a hole we just completed.

The course is already 4 star rated and I was using my SG2.5 to play the course at the time. This course has a lot of blind landing areas and blind shots to greens so a GPS is very useful there.

She only got close enough to us for me to ask if she was updating targets once . Her reply was, "Yes, for SkyCaddie." She moved on and I did not get a change to ask who selected the targets and how long it may take before the new information will be ready.

It was nice to see that my annual subscription fee was being put to good use. :)

I have a skycaddie and use it almost every round, as well as a rangefinder. I think that skycaddie has a ways to go. The most common errors I see are in the green detail, but even more often, mistakes or missing info around water hazards where the hazard is an odd shape and sits in the middle or side of the fairway. I continue to believe if I had to make a choice for one or the other, I would choose the rangefinder. I would encourage skycaddie to keep improving. I suspect they use paid contractors for most of the course mapping and I think that some of these people are better than others.

I agree on the blind shots, it takes 2-3 times to "understand" you're way around there.....

where are you in VA?

Yorktown. I play mostly the Peninsula munis and go to the "better" courses around Williamsburg and the southside on occasion. I used to be a member at Eaglewood a few years before Isabel hit. They got too proud of their course and the dues got too high.

I was changing the courses on my SG2.5 today to play a course tomorrow that was not loaded on it. During the process I noticed that about 8 courses in my area had updates available since I first put them in my vault a month ago. Stonehouse was not one of the updated courses yet. I guess they have some folks in my area recording new data.
