Byron Morgan 007 or C&L 1, with or without sound slot?

Parky

Recommended Posts

I've decided, based on the feedback I've read on the various to either buy a BM 007, or a C&L -1. Hopefully they will ship to Europe...

However, I'm interested in the views of those who have used both, and i'm interested in the differences to feel/sound the slot makes.

Finally, which finish would you recommend - the "black star" finish looks great on the BM 007, however their website only offers Black oxide, satin, or triple polish.

Cheers - David

I cannot comment on C&L putters as I have never putted with one. However, I read that they are outstanding all the time. I don't ever recall reading a bad review of this putter so I believe them to be tremendous.

I own a Byron Morgan 007x with Rincon neck finished in misted Coldstar finish. This is one fantastic putter: great balance, weight, feel, looks, etc. Byron Morgan is a very talented putter designer and maker and the proof is in his work. I would never hesitate in purchasing a putter from Byron. Steve (ZMan) is a terrific representative for Byron and will make sure you get what you want. This is a first class organization producing first class products.

I have had both. Two C & L floating face models and 3 Byron OO7 sound slot models. I still have one of each. A chrome C & L and an Oil Can Byron.

Both are great putters, but they have different looks. The C & L has rounded bumpers while the OO7 has flatter bumpers. The Byron hs a thinner topline while the C & L is thicker at address. IMO the C & L has a softer look than Byron. I have never been disappointed in my decision to use sound slot putters from either maker. I have always liked the additional audio they provide me.

Price is a wash as they are close, if not the same in price. Both makers are amazing at handstamping so your requests should be no issue either.

BEst of luck with your decision.

As a practical matter, isn't a sound slot problematic on a carbon steel putter as moisture can reside in the slot and corrode (like a cancer) a masterpiece putter from the inside?

This is a real consideration for those of us in the pacific northwest.

To those with both..

Carbon or SS?

Which from 40ft, which from 5ft?

Sound slot I'm heraring is a good thing...

Feel is subjective, but IMO carbon. I perceive it as softer than stainless. I also prefer a darker finish on my putters than stainless typically affords.

A carbon putter is problematic as a whole (regardless of the sound slot), but is easier to maintain if it is plated. If you follow basic guidelines such as drying your putter after shots or after the round, don't store your putter in a wet headcover, and apply a 3 and 1 oil or CRC Silicone spray between uses you will be fine.

Other members in tropical climates use carbon putters with sound slots and they have no issues.

If you don't want to worry then you should probably get a plated finish, or go with stainless. Always remember though, even stainless or plated finishes will oxidize if they are stored in a wet headcover.

Herd8497. Sorry to be so Naïve... but what is a plated finish?

Some sort of nickel or copper plating that is applied to the carbon steel. A plating with a rust resistant finish will aid in preventing rust. A number of people offer plating services, Geoputters, Putterplating, Slighter golf (in the Seattle area), etc. Unless golf is played in late July through September, only, I would definitely get the putter plated.

Carbon steel without plating is not a great idea unless you take very good care of your putter like you said, or you live in a desert, LOL. Even with plating it can rust and no putter should be stored wet, so make sure your headcover and putter are dry after the round. We do plating and polymer coating on our carbon steel putters and I advise people all the time to NEVER store a putter wet.

Just an FYI to all the stainless guys, it is stainless, not stain proof and if stored wet even a stainless putter can and will rust.

Again, I have both SS and carbon. Both are good on the greens no matter the distance! I have quite a few putters, and it usally doesn't matter which one I choose on that particulat day. If it is wet, I use stainless.
