making your own putting green in your backyard

Hi everyone, I'm new here :wave: . I've been contemplating on building a small putting green in my backyard in NJ. I would definitely be using artificial turf, there's no way I'm gonna grow proper grass, and there's no way I have the time to manicure it. Does anyone have any suggestions or links that can help me get started? Please don't send me a link to google, I've looked and I'm hoping you guys have more knowledge about this.

Oh no, I was hoping to do this as cheaply as possible. I guess you didn't have such good luck with stuff from Home Depot. That's what I was going to do. What went wrong?

here is a great build up guide,if you have spare room in your house or whatever build your own 8x8 green. then you could practice during the winter.

Well they're might be different kinds but the typical green turf doesn't work well. At the custom club/simulator shop I work at we decided to make a practice green, and wanted to do it as cheap as possible.

Problem 1 is that it can only putt smoothly one way. The grain just makes the ball bounce and skid the other way.

Problem 2 is that the way its made is in small straight lines. so when putting with the grain the ball sort of gets stuck in these lines and will keep on rolling straight even if the putt wasn't hit square. Think of it as tiny little gutters like in bowling. Its a little hard to explain but I think you get the idea.

When I want to practice putting I use the platforms that are used for the putting on the simulator. Its a platform similar to what the previous poster talked about and its covered with some type of green carpet that is just awsome for putting on. Only problem is a 12 square foot piece of it is like 1500 bucks.

I saw this one before, it was very interesting and very informative.

That one in the link looks great, similar to what we have for our simulators. They start out pretty flat but do warp a bit over time. Atleast ours did, we used plywood though, it looks like the stuff he used was a little thicker.

Having a jack to change the break would be awsome.
