Putt like Ben Crenshaw

How do I do it?
Hi, I'm new to the game, but if there's any part of my game I'd like to be great at it's putting and the person who I'd like to emulate the most is probably Ben Crenshaw. I want to be a good feel putter and not get too mechanical which seems in line with his mentality. I remember seeing him win the Masters, but at the time I didn't really pay attention to his putting style and now that he's retired I haven't had the chance to really analyze it. So does anyone have tips on his style, technique, or mentality that I can use in order to putt like him? Thanks.

Find someone who you consider a damn fine putter and practice with them for dollar bills. Becoming a good feel putter only happens with a lot of practice. Effective practice comes when your concentration is at its best. Putting against someone for money is a great way to whip yourself into shape.

I lost a lot money for years putting against an instructor who was a much better putter than I was before I learned to get my putting stroke, green reading, feel, and confidence to where it needs to be. Now I am not afraid to challenge anyone for dollar bills on the green.

Very good advice above. Also be careful with copying someones stroke. I know Ben to me looks like an open gate shut gate putter and therefore work great with a heel shafted blade. If you are using a MOI putter then this might be hard (aqt least it was for me) and my stroke got too long. Spen lots of time puitting. Whether it is in the living room (no shag carpet) or on a putting green. Make your stroke reliable and this will only come with practice. Good luck my friend.

I happened to listen to a conversation Ben had with another about his putting. Another poster hit the nail on the head Ben has a slite semi-circle to his stroke meaning his putter comes inside the line, on the backstroke, then squares up at the ball and then closes coming inside the line after the ball is struck. Ben said that his one swing thought was to get the head of the putter behind his hands on the backstroke and the weight of the putter will take care of the rest. He was using a blade heel shafted putter. There is a putting aid that is selling, to promote this style of putting. In essence it is about a 2 1/2 foot board that has a slite radius or curve in it and you place the heel of your putter against it and make the stroke following the board, it promotes this stroke. I forget the name of the aid.

I believe it is the Putting Arc. You can make something similar if you have a table saw. Take a 3 foot long 2X4 and cut it lengthwise at an angle that is the same as the angle your putter shaft sits at address (make a few practice cuts on scrap until you get the angle right - should be somewhere around 72*). Glue a piece of 3' long by 6" high by 1/4" thick fiberboard or plexiglass to it and you have a training aid for the arc putting style.
