Would the Futura still be legal if I took the horse shoe off the back?

Yes, it would but I could add some weights to it. Just not crazy about the horse shoe. I think it would look good w/out it

Wouldn't that make it the detour?

Not really. The detour is curved to "help" you produce a gating stroke. The Futura back is straight

Why and when was the futura deemed illegal? I was thinking of buying a futura phantom not the mallot but not if it's illegal.

I didn't say it was illegal in current form. I was wondering if it would STILL be legal if you took the back horseshoe off

I don't think it would be illegal, just the worst putter ever. The rest of that head is aluminum, and weighted/shafted to allow for that huge chunk of steel. Getting all that weight back on to the putter would be challenging, and to do it evenly, almost impossible. That is the thing about the futura. It looks hideous, but was very well weighted. You have to be able to focus on the golf ball only to use that putter.

As long as you don't remove the horseshoe during a round it would be legal for play.
