I personally find the XG to be the best looking #9 head out of any manufacturer. The cut-off sightline on the Black series is dissapointing and from what I've heard the Black/Tour series are just firmer inserts + heavier heads. If I were you i'd get the XG or if you don't want a soft insert you could have the insert removed and one inserted by one of the popular putter makers.

I think the prices that the black series can be had at now makes them worth a shot if you know that's what you want. I'm not sure if the inserts are all that different from one model to the next since this is my first Odyssey. Oh and yes..it's sick looking, in a good way.

Alot of people will say the insert is crap, muted, or the softness leads to poor distance judgement on longer putts. That hasn't been an issue for me and i've had mine in the bag since early last fall.

Pay no attention to the naysayers! If it works for you and you like it, that's what is important. There seems to be a few people around here that have a problem with the Odyssey inserts, and will post about how cheap they are whenever they get a chance! They just cannot accept that there are people who actually like the softer feel of an insert, and have no problem putting with one!

For the record, the Tour and Black i models have firmer feeling inserts than the standard XG models.

Hey 755, when we played last summer I was using the XG #9. It's the only thing in my bag that's hung around for over a year :). I cut it down a bit shorter, and I absolutely love it. I've been playing with a MacGregor DCT Bellaire (very different shape, but I got it really cheap and wanted to give the DCT technology a chance). I like it, but I'm not sure I love it the way I love my XG#9.

We'll see.

If an insert is good enough for Mickelson....

If you like the insert go for it. I've gone through few putters this year, including a few Odysseys. I like the weight of the Tours better than the XGs. Ended going for the non-insert Black #1. But it's all personal preference.

Is the Black worth it? For me, the Black milled is great as I need a big sweet spot since I've changed over to an arc stroke. The mallets is a different story. I think the Tours are some of the best bang for the buck.

Good Luck!

I went to a local shop today and they had a XG and Black Series i #9, I could not tell a GREAT amount of difference in the two performance wise, made about the same amount of putts with both, i series certainly a little heavier, which was nice and does look a lot better. Would love to get a look at the Tour before bying anything.

Is it just me or do these play a little shorter than other putters?? I normally play 34" but a 35" felt really comfortable in my hands with this model. Maybe becauce of the flat profile??
