Titleist 917f2 vs. 904f

I added the 917f2 this year, and it's been really amazing so far. Not sure why but I'm really consistent with it. It's just so point and shoot. Could just be the right shaft, swingweight, set-up or a combination, but it just fits me right. It's not the longest 3 wood though. In fact, it's a lot shorter than both my Adams fairways, (super LS and xtd-Ti).

Tonight I thought I'd bring out my 904f just for old times sake. I played that 3 wood for many years, and it's in mint shape, but my SS has dropped off, and it has a stiff shaft in it Didn't expect much, but wow, it didn't disappoint. It feels just a solid as anything out there today. Struggled with consistency, but the shaft is 1/2" overlength, and it seems to make a difference. It also doesn't feel as head heavy as the 917. I could easily put this back in as my gamer though. I'd love to put a regular shaft in this, but it's a bore-thru, so I'd have to do some math to get the right shaft for it. Probably not worth it really. It's a very similar shape to the 917f3, so I'd probably just opt for that instead.

I know that no one has shown any interest here, so I'm posting a follow up strictly for me I guess. I did shorten the 904 back to 43". I'm definitely hitting it even better now. The shaft on paper should be way too stiff for me now, but I hit it very straight, and on a mid-high traj. A little shorter than my 917f2, and much shorter than either of my Adams fairways, but combined with the new softer balls, this feels so solid. This could easily be my gamer, I really love vintage clubs. I'm having great success with the 917f2 right now, so It will have a secure place in my back-up set.

I would imagine the newer heads are just that much more forgiving and better through the turf. The 913 was really good for me, the 915 even better... I played the 906f2 for a bit and when hit well, it was great but it was tough off the turf and not forgiving when not hit out of the center.. but if it works for you, game the hell out of it!

The last few fairway wood offerings from Titleist have been solid. The new TS3 is a beast!! Just love the look of the classic Titleist fairway woods even back to the PT.

I had some of the best 3 wood shots I've ever had with that 3 wood with the Proforce V2 85 fairway shaft (that was 90 grams IIRC). 260-270 bombs! Definitely wasn't that forgiving, and had poor turf interaction for sure.
