Black Oxide Maintenance

What would I have to do?

I'm considering refinishing my Scotty Cameron Studio Select with the Onyxe Black Oxide Matte finish from the Putter Lounge. Before sending this in, I want to know what I will have to do to maintain this finish after I start to use it again. Thanks!

Oil it down to prevent rust. Black oxide is not that durable of a finish so it's still going to rust.

Keep it oiled down between rounds. Wipe it after each use (that means every green). Use the headcover only when at the course and in travel to prevent dings. When you get home, remove the headcover and keep the putter from being covered. The headcover can hold moisture and debris that will cause it to rust prematurely.

The Black Oxide finish is eventually going to wear, unfortunately. Aside from a raw finish, it's possibly the most high maintenance. The putter isn't going to wear as quick because of there being a lack of impact forces with the ground and ball. The cleaner and drier you can keep it, the longer it'll last. Oh, and if the course has used a chemical treatment on the greens, those chemicals can cause it to rust within a single round. On those days, you're best using a back-up or finding a way to keep from using the headcover but still preventing dings.

Okay, so I guess living in Hawaii isn't going to help...I heard from somewhere that black oxide is more like a stain when it comes to stainless steel, is this true?

Black oxide on stainless isn't quite the same as on carbon steel. On carbon steel it reacts with the steel to oxidize the surface before the environment can react and oxidize in the form of rust. The chromium and nickel in stainless are already blocking that oxidation from happening in stainless the black oxide isn't quite as integral to the surface as on carbon steel.
