If you had to game a set, gun to head, to perform year after year with consistent results between ZX7/5 combo (og version) or Ping i210, confidence, forgiveness, spin, launch etc.  Which would it be?

Both sets are great. In my opinion it would come down to a spin issue. If you’re a high spin/high trajectory player the Srixon would be better you. If you’re a lower spin/lower trajectory guy the Pings would be better. The Pings will be slightly more forgiving on mishits but it’s close.

See signature. The two specified sets were my last two. The tradeoffs between them are significant to the point of being blatant. Their characteristics are well documented in various threads and are generally in line with reality IMO.

This sums it up right here.

100% agree as well - I would pick based on spin characteristics. I was just talking to a fitter and he said he fits most better players into i230 or zx7 mk2 based on if they are high or low spin players.

I’ve hit both indoors but gamed neither. I feel like the leading edge grind of the Srixon’s would be better for me on turf.

I think the pings fit more players.

the srixons soles are very polarizing and can have a big impact on well….impact with with ball.  They either work or they don’t.  Where as the pings work for most they just may not feel the greatest.

Dang, based on username I would have put money down you would say Srixon!

I much preferred the ZX7s over the i210s. Feel was a factor and the i210s spin so much more for me - and not in a good way. Loved the performance of the Srixons.

I’ve been eyeing a set of i230s that I hit SO well in the simulator. Feel and performance is fantastic and they seem to produce the spin/distance numbers I’m looking for, but the i210s spin so much and we’re so short that I’ve been scared to get them.

You need spin?  Go i210.

You want less spin and more distance?  ZX7s are the ticket.

The i230s spin less than the i210s, especially in power spec.    Zx7 will still spin less and fly farther

Nothing really. I love the look and they perform pretty well. I had a set of hmbs a while ago and sold them. Was tinkering around and got some zx5 mkii that I shot my best ever round with, but being a wrxer and a club junkie I sold them because I missed my mizuno irons. I know it’s a me thing but I had a couple bad rounds in a row with them. I just got a used set of modus 115 I’m going to swap with the modus 120 and see what they are about otherwise they are going on the bst.

i own the zx5 and they launch too low with Modus 105, will the Ping 230 launch higher?

I'd prefer the I210 but I also played the I210 for 4 years and had good results. Both are great irons. As others have said, Srixon might be a better option for someone looking for a bit more distance and/or lower flight. I210 is a better allrounder and definitely a lot harder to hit offline.

I've played the zx7 OG and the i230s (similar, but not apples to apples with the i210). Had some great rounds, even shot my all time low score with the i230. Think I would have stuck with them, but wasn't in love with the turf interaction. Given turf interaction is mostly about how you swing the club, I ended up going back to the Srixons as they are a better fit for how I hit the ball. At that point the new MKii were out, so went with the newer model. I like that the mkii spin just a little bit more than the OG zx7, and from a feel perspective (I know, subjective), prefer the forged metal versus the cast.

Nothing against the Pings at all, great clubs, the sole just didn't agree with me occasionally during a round, where the Srixons always do.

A little different than what you were asking. Not sure if this helps. But, to answer your question, I'd game the Srixons if I was forced to choose between the two, even though I don't like the combo set of adding the zx5's since the offset is different.

Absolutely good info.  I hear a lot a lot a lot about some design and I’m just not sure I notice those things as much with irons.  Wedge grinds for sure, but I tend fall into the camp that thinks more bounce helps most players.
