2012 True Temper Project X PXI
easyyy ·

Caught at Demo Day Pics and video...
Project X PXi shaft has a softer feel than PX and is lighter with minimal trajectory problems. As you go lighter the ball goes higher in most cases and Project X PXi accomplishes this. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wZ6g52zhC0w?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The new shaft is lighter (116 grams in the 6.5) than previous versions -- as a comparison the Dynamic Gold is 128 grams. This shaft has shaved off 12 to 14 grams depending on flex, and it is noticeable. The inner profile of the shaft has been changed. They took weight out of the center part of the shaft and moved it towards the butt and tip sections so the shaft plays a little more tip stiff. Because the tip plays a bit stiffer, they actually been have able to keep the same flight trajectory & spin characteristics, which means more distance. Greater distance by virtue of reduced weight properties. Tour-caliber spin control and tip stability in a lightweight package ... hallmarks of the PX franchise. Improved feel through optimized butt to tip stiffness calibration.

Amount of material (wall thickness) is consistent from butt to tip.
A weak middle, with a beefy tip section is going to cause inconsistent ball flights....am I wrong?
Golf shafts shafts are limited to how much an engineer can tweak them, and I dont see this change being an "improvement" over what the Project X series stands for, "tip stability with constant weights. Stepless shaft."
Also, interesting move by the Project X rep to mention the flaws of the "old" project x shafts being too boardy and flexing down causes high ball flights. Great. So now if the pxi completely bombs (which IMO, it won't because i think the changes to the physical structuring of the shaft, will not be enough to see much of a change from previous models, and with the new satin finish and marketing, people will gobble these up like they do iPhones and iPads, even at high prices). Then you have a flawed old shaft and a flawed new shaft.

Not so sure about the graphics but I'm also not sure on my C tapers performance and feel wise - so certainly very interested to hear more about the PX PXI iron shafts......

I tested the new ones at 6.5 when I have played 6.0s of the standard PXs. I hit these next to DG S-300s.
The new PXI's were clearly lighter in weight and I felt that they played less stiff and I hit them higher in trajectory. But that is not unusual for me to do so with lighter weight shafts. At this point, I prefer my S-flex C-Tapers from KGS. But I will likely do some more rigorous testing later.

I just ordered some I20's with PXI, PING only offers 6.0 & 6.5 I told them I wanted them to play to PX 5.5 stiffness and they told me to soft step them once. You would disagree with their assessment? I'm not sure if they have hit them. I have the c-tapers stiff in my anser's and they are too stiff for me. Just wondering if I should go 6.0 or 6.0 soft stepped?

Why did you go from a 5.5 to a 6.0 in the PXi? I game 5.5's now and I'm making the switch next week.

I was told by ping that they only offered 6.0 & 6.5 so I asked them to soft ste once. But other posts make me wonder if 6.0 will play like 5.5 px straight in?

Lower trajectory and softer feel, slightly lighter. Sounds like the RIFLE.
I wish they were cheaper.

What was the upcharge? I'd recommend soft stepping them if you can't get the 5.5. One soft step would make them around a 5.7.
thanks -

Yet again, I'm sure the PXi will flex like the PX, i.e. 6.0 will be 6.5, and softstepped will be 6.2-6.3.

As a sidebar comment; the graphics are awesome on this shaft, but be prepared if you have the shaft splined/Flo...it may end up in an odd spot! For those who have a sensitivity to busy graphics, expect to have a visual challenge.
