If I shorten my irons 1/4 inch what will happen to SW?

OK here's what I figured out. A 1/2" cut to the shaft should lose 3 sw points. So a 1/4" should equal out to 1-2 pt loss. A 5 gram drop in grip weight should gain 1 sw point. So I'm at 1 pt or less of a drop overall. Then I just need to add some lead tape (how much?).

Right? Anyone? Bueller?

why are you cutting your irons 1/4 of an inch. that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard.

Now come on. It may be dumb but it certainly isn't the dumbest thing you've heard!

Honestly, my irons are 1/4" over std and and I like std length. I could always choke up ever so slightly. But I'm anal and I have a nice workshop in my basement I like to goto and escape my wife. So anything I can tinker with helps.

Does that help explain my absurd question that nobody seems to want to answer?

changing grip weight is only going to fool the swing weight scale, the actual swing weight you feel will be the same, you probably wont notice the the weight drop. and yes why a 1/4 inch

Thanks for the answer. Again I'm anal. But when you say fool the scale I don't follow you. The clubs are 1/4" too long and the grips (which I hate) are about 5 grams heavier then the ones I like. I was going to do this but figured I put it out there for input. I had read Joe Kwok's info and just divided by 2.

But if I kept the length as is and changed grips the SW will go up (and I'm happy where it's at). To me it's kind of a win win.

But again when you say fool the scale, I don't follow the logic. It's either D3 or it isn't, right? Especially, on such a small adjustment.

this may help figure out what you'll need to do to maintain the same SW (courtesy of True Temper's FAQ):

The swing-weight of a club is the balance of the overall weight of the club. The higher the swing-weight the more the weight is distributed towards the club end and vice versa. Standard swing-weight for men is D-0 to D-2 for women it is C-7 to C-9.

Basic swing-weight rules:

every 2 grams added to head weight = 1 s/w;

every 7 grams of shaft weight = 1 s/w;

every 4 grams of grip weight = 1 s/w ;

every 1/2" over length = 3 s/w.

To increase swing-weight, either

1) lengthen the club, 2) add weight to the head, or 3) use a heavier shaft.

To decrease swing-weight, either

1) shorten the club, 2) add weight to the butt end, or 3) use a lighter shaft.

Thanks to those of you who responded and tried to help (please see my prior post for my breakdown). This is what I was basing my logic on by Joe Kwok...

All I want is some confirmation.

Remember, this is just a ball park figure for normal most case.

Some shaft have tip or butt weight will not be applied on this rule.

1/2" = 3 swing weight points

2 gr club head weight = 1 swing weight point

5 gr grip = 1 swing weight point

9 gr shaft weight differences = 1 swing weight point

4* flatter lie = increase 1 swing weight point

Joe

* To some out there this may seem to be a dumb question but since this game is played between the ears more then anywhere else it matters. But if all you want to do is belittle other posters for their questions (and offer no relevant info), kindly keep you comments to yourself (Cameronaddict).

I was a little harsh on you but honestly this can turn into a debilitating phobia. :tongue:

No problem. I get the same way sometimes. But I only ask the question just to make sure that my idiocy makes sense to me.

Thanks Willy for the confirmation. Nice sharpener too. Take care.

sorry...quick (probably stupid) question...but I'm confused about True Temper's guide above. Wouldn't using a lighter shaft increase the swing weight? I don't mean to make this into an SAT problem, but let's say a clubhead weights "X" grams and currently has a Dynamic Gold shaft. You then reshaft the clubhead with a Dynamic Golf SL shaft. Wouldn't this increase the swing weight?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts...

Swingweight is based on a fulcrum point below the grip end of the shaft (12 or 14 inches depending on the scale). Because there is more club on the head side of the fulcrum, as opposed to the grip side, a heavier shaft will increase the swingweight more than a light shaft. For example, if you had an 60 gram shaft, 40 grams may be on the clubhead side while only 20 is on the grip side, but in a steel shaft, 80 grams may be on the clubhead side as opposed to 40 on the grip side. However, because the weight is spread across the club, it takes approx 9 grams of shaft weight to change the swingweight 1 point.

Cut the shafts 1/4, you will lose approx 1.5 swingweight points, but the lighter grip which you prefer will get that swingweight back. Ultimately, the club will be approx 7 grams lighter and you will probably never feel any difference since the amounts you are discussing are so small.

Ignore the people who claim to feel a 1 swingweight point difference.

Sorry if you felt I was attacking you. I was more saying if some one has gone to fitting you in 1/4 inch increments that is probably bunk. Sorry man, but honestly a d0 and a c9 feel an awful lot alike to most people. I was actually more saying that this can lead to paralysis by analysis. Please don't take my comments before you posted that your irons were over standard. Honestly what is standard by the way. I am certain that companies standard varies by more than a 1/4 of an inch. Ok so here for my constructive portion. You may want to try the club with a light grip first and not worry about what the swing weight is. (I am not however saying try to play them that way, and suck it up. ) I am however suggesting that you try it on the range you may hit them better slightly lighter. Esp. if you are coming from pings. And as for the note about the dynamic gold sl this will not raise the swing weight i do not believe because the dynamic gold sl was supposed to replace the dg in every way seamlessly fit directly into a set and you were not supposed to notice a difference. This shaft is some how balanced(see back weighted). To match the playing characteristics of another shaft (dynamic gold)
