Fitting ?'s

New to this site and haven't had new golf clubs in close to 15yrs. I play Titleist DCI Golf OS + in regular shaft. These clubs have been great to me, but finally going to break down and buy a new set to take advantage of all the new technology.

Now my Driver SS is around 120mph. My 6 iron has been around 90mph. I hit my 9 iron 150 with a TM R7. 130yrds with my 15 yr old Titleist w/ regular shafts. Haven't had a handicap in years, but always shoot low 80's and high 70's.

I was fitted at RDunn's, actually I thought I was being fitted for some new clubs...TM R7. The guy looked at my 6 iron swing and suggested Rifle 6.0. Since I hit the ball very high he suggested going with flighted shafts. Now I have been out of buying clubs for 15 years..I dunno what he's talking about, hit them and felt good. End up ordering a set a 2* upright Project X flighted rifle 6.0 TM R7's.

I notice someone else doing a fitting at another RD. They were using a hitting board, I never used this during my fitting. So I ask to get fitted again at this other RD, with some Ping G10's and i10's. Find out I am 3* upright. and LOVE THEM!! so smooth and hit so sweet....I think I messed up getting the R7's.

Anyways, my order came in today for the R7's, and first thing I notice they are not flighted shafts. RD says that flighted shafts are not available on the R7's, and that flighted shafts will give me a higher ball flight than standard Rifles. Went to TM's site and see the option right there for flighted shafts in 6.0...so they lied. Next, I end up hitting them and am not hitting flush center..90% a little off center towards the toe. Which makes me believe the 3* upright was correct. Pro there says its my swing and tries to get me to change my swing. I mention this to him, and he says that they cant be bent anymore and that 2* should be close enough. Also, I am draw/hooking the dang things. My Titleist I was either dead straight or with a very slight draw.

I am not happy. Luckily RD has a 90 day guarantee, but I think I am going down tomorrow to the other RD and trade these back in for the Ping G10's at 3* upright. What else should I look out for in my fitting? I will be getting it done again just to be sure.

What do you think of the R7's vs G10's? I think my experience with the fitting just made me blah the TM's... Also, this set will need to last 5 more years.

Welcome to the board. I think your on the right track to get another fitting..the first experience sounds like the guy was pretty incompetent. I'm a ping fan so it's hard for me not to be biased, I have a friend who plays the R7 tps they are nice clubs also. One thing to consider would be resale value, 5 year old pings are worth alot more than 5 year old TM's.

I would explain the situation to the manager at RDunns and expect a full refund on the original purchase.

Had talked to the manager and showed him my 90% toe hits, and asked about the flighted shafts.....he just sent me out with the guy that fit me and had him look at my swing.

"TM R7 and G10 all have off set neck; which promote draw / hook than a less off set iron.

How does the style compare with your old club?"

Know what? I never looked at this! I didn't even think of this, but I did show the guy fitting me what I had been playing....good job he did

R7's have a high offset...so should I look at the i10's or the R7 tp's? They have a lot less o/s

and am I right about flighted shafts giving you a lower trajectory with 8-pw irons?

striking board is not the final answer to fitting by all means.

it'll help to identify if the lie is too out of wack, that's it.

when you demo a new club, don't demo it by hitting into a net in the store, that could do you no good.

demo the clubs at least on a driving range or best, on the golf course.

for the irons, you'd wish to select at least a few from the mid irons which you like and get to hit at least one short iron and one longest iron that you'll play on the golf course out of the final 2 or 3 favored.

a new shaft will take awhile to get used to, and all the newer irons have stronger loft and longer shaft, so give it a few weeks to slide into the new irons.

cool thanks...

just played today and my 9-aw were deadly accurate..anything above that was hit or miss. Definately going to take some time to fit into these including a new driver, putter, irons, wedges, and bag. Whew replaced everything! Still shot a 89 (normally shoot an 82 on this course)but could have been better..slow greens cost me 3-4 strokes...draw and toeing my irons cost me a few more....going to try these again and see what happens.

surprised that no one mentioned this yet, but different companies have different "standard" lie angles (confusing, i know). the r7 irons have a 6i lie angle of 62.5* and the i10 irons have a 6i lie angle of 61.5* so do not worry that you are fit improperly. as you become accustomed to the new clubs you will better be able to judge how they fit you, and then adjust as necessary.
