Getting started

I'm a huge golf nerd but have never gotten into any of the work behind it.

 

If I'm going to take a sturdy bench or table and initiate a golf workshop, assuming I will be only regripping and re shafting to start, what are the key "must-have" things? Obviously I have a vice, and I need stuff like grips and ferrules... But I really have no clue where the newbie starts.

Hey man, I like yourself wanted to jump into this a few years ago. I will give you my experience rather than giving you a bunch of things to read through.

Regripping - it is stupid simple and straight forward. A vise helps, but you don't need one. I buy my materials as I go so I don't have a bunch of money invested into things I may not need for a while. Keep an eye out for grip deals and stock up then if you like them. I keep a razor knife, solvent, grip tape, and (grip deal) grips readily available now. I just keep these things since when you buy them the first time, they will last 3-4 sets.

Club building - buy a heat gun! It is the best $25 you will spend. For this I do keep epoxy around, but buy ferrules as I go because I like to change colors every once in a while. You will also need a drill to remove old epoxy from hoses / shafts. They sell tools to do this with, but a drill and medium sized bit work just as well. If you plan on pulling graphite shafts, you have to have a shaft extractor. Steel shafts can be heated, then twisted to break the epoxy bond and the shaft can then be pulled right out. Sand paper, shops towels, acetone, and little things are also needed, but many people have these in their garage.

Serious investment (for myself anyway) If you are a numbers guy, then a swing weight scale is pretty key. Look to spend $100 or more for a decent one. Shaft extractor: I pull all my irons by hand, but take graphite to a shop - costs me $2 a pull and an extractor costs +$100 for a decent one again.
