Hogan vs Tiger Release Comparison

So there's this other thread called mothing flippin' Hogan that talks about how Hogan's left wrist looked to break down very quickly after impact, and the OP was freaked out that Hogan was a flipper. That's where one pic was posted by Dairic and then a comment was made by Ping10Guy and it got me thinking.

Here's the pic and the posts that went with it:

The clearing action is what got me thinking more than anything. Why is Tiger so straight-legged here while Hogan is not?

To me it seems Hogan is more rotational (obviously) but he using his right hip and right side in general to propel himself toward the target and around. Tiger seems to be using much more down and up forces and seems to get down, down, and further down throughout his swing before he really pushes himself up and could probably jump up if he didn't need to impact the ball.

I just wanted to discuss the different clearing actions and what could be the possible merits of each.

I would call Hogan's clearing action a right hip release and Tiger's more of a Tailbone or Squat release.

I would say a guy like David Duval in his prime had a very similar right hip release clearing action to Hogan's.

While Duval and Hogan had drastically different lever delivery actions they had a very similar clearing action.

I believe duval, tiger, and hogan all had the same postural release where they would post up onto the left leg.

I know golf digest did a swing sequence thing in 1999 a few days after he shot his 59 at the hope. Wish I could find that sequence.

Cool stuff Tembo. It's surprisingly difficult to find good footage of Duval's swing. I'll keep looking.

I think Tiger is somewhat addicted to the feeling of power that posting up like that gives you. Hard to go back once you've been there, ya know? Hogan had a more powerful posting move prior to the accident.
