Most forgiving of the “players” irons

Recommended Posts

When the gen 6 PXG’s first came out I went and got fitted for some of the XP’s. Had them bent a few degrees weak because I’m generally a longer hitter and was hitting the stock 7i 200 and prefer to play my 7i more in the 170-175 range.

my only problem with these irons is that occasionally they’ll hit absolute low spin nukes.

considering trying out some other irons in maybe even just something like my 7-PW and potentially keeping my 4-6 as I do like them.

been eyeing something like the 0317T’s, Mizuno 245’s and a couple others. I know people also love the p790’s but I think those are pretty similar to my XP’s and kind of prone to the same issue of occasionally hitting nukes

thanks!

I didn't find much difference in distance or spin when I compared the 245's and the JPX 923 HMP's. Only difference for me was the overall forgiveness across the face, the HMP's maintained almost the same distance even with my occasional hack misses. But in the middle of the face, they're both almost equally hot. Meaning: the 245's are more "player's distance" than they appear.

The 243's would be the next step towards "players" irons in the Mizuno line. 243's were definitely less hot, but also quite a bit less forgiving for me. Even as a 12 with so-so ball striking, I could play the 245's no problem. But the 243's were out of my league.

I echo the Mizuno 240 lineup.  I really loved the 223's when I tried them - I haven't tried the 243's, but my guess is they will play almost identically to the 223's.  Three others to consider: Ping i230, Edel SMS (or SMS Pro), Wilson Staff D9 Forged, and Callaway Rogue ST Pro (my gamers).

If you're trying to get some solid forgiveness but purposely want them to be weaker Taylormade P770, or if you want to stick with PXG, the 0317cb's might be what you're looking for.

Driver: Taylormade Qi10LS, Fujikura Ventus TR Black 6X. (Fit by Truespec North Georgia 2024)

3W: Taylormade Sim Max, Accra FX 2.0 200 M3. (Fit by Club Champion Atlanta 2019)

2I: Ping iCrossover, Fujikura Axiom 105X. (Self-fit 2024)

4I-PW: Callaway Rogue ST Pro, Fujikura Axiom 105X. (Self-fit 2023)

Wedges: 47, 51, 59 Edison Forged, Mitsubishi MMT 125 TX. (Self-fit 2021)

Putter: LAB Golf DF 2.1 (Self-fit 2022)

Ball: Chromesoft X (Fit by Ping's Ballnamic system).

Bag: MNML.

Cart: Foresight Sports ForeCaddy Smart Cart.

Shoes: Asics Gel Kayano Ace.

Im generally a pretty good ball striker, especially in the 7 to wedges category id say. Definitely not the part of my game that lets me down usually lol. Wish I had like 5 hours to just sit in a bay with all the heads I want to try fitted for me lmao

I've fully experienced excessive fliers from both pxg 0211 irons and then also mizunos HMP's which made me instantly sell both sets. Hitting the ball far isn't a problem for my game, but its a problem when i fly it into the parking lot instead of the number it should be to the middle of the green. Iron striking for me is a strong suit but I'm no scratch player either. I just asked basically the same question in the 2024 TM thread about the 790's because I've seen positive outcomes over the previous models in distance dispersion and was told well hit it out of the center. Ya definitely in a perfect world sure.

Anyways i have my eye on obviously the new 790's, zx5's, maybe a 200 line from mizuno, and then some CB sets like 317 or some of the forged DTC CB's while still doing some more research before fitting and purchasing.

i210’s - Best front-to-back dispersion I’ve ever seen (haven’t tried the 230’s for this simple reason).

You listed player's irons in the title but posted about player's distance irons in your post.  If you hit the ball that far, everything you listed will be similar.  To have decent forgiveness in a less distance oriented package, try i230, T150 and MP243 IMO.

That’s a fair assessment. I guess I’m just worried with the even better player irons if my swing isn’t extremely pure lm going to lose 50 yards on an 7 iron or something haha. My normal miss is a toe ball so I do need some forgiveness. I just don’t need the added distance on good strikes haha

If distance control is what you’re looking for, the i230 and King Tour are two of the most forgiving.

Best way to find out how penalizing a players iron will be for you is to test them out.  Misses are relative.  Your idea of a toe ball might be 7 mm off the center of the face in which case most players irons will not penalize you that much compared to what you're playing now.  Someone else might consider a toe ball as 21 mm off the center of the face where what you are playing now the ball might still go 120 yards...but a players iron might only go 80 yards because you missed the grooves completely.

I second the Cobra King Tour irons. I am not the greatest ballstriker by any stretch of the imagination and I find the King Tours very forgiving. Toe strikes might lose 5 or 6 yards with no directional loss. You definitely feel the miss though lol but mishits from the center aren't punished too hard regarding distance
