Scotty has gone big time (not).

 

I have been a member since 2001, before it was "Club Cameron". This years member gear by far is the worst. The putter cover has new graphics but no year on it. The towel (down right cheap), there is a sticker (cheap), the hat is cool (3 in a row), and another pin (I think it is his 4th in as many years). The best was the carry bag in 2004. I have the backpack, but I never used it (its still brand new).

 

I think a great membership deal would be a carry bag: Doll up one of these babies!

It would appear the effort into this years kit was all an afterthought. It's too bad because before this year the membership gear was fantastic.

Scotty Cameron has no more thoughts.. His ideas are washed up and he is starting to run out of colors on the color wheel to fill in his Circle T's. Please, he makes a good solid putter, but whoever is the graphic designer at Scotty Cameron Titliest needs to think of some new stuff. I can think of things that a true player wants in a 40 minute elementary class. Scotty if your going to charge us, at least give us a goody bag we can show up to the country club with.... not a municiple course. Your market is the ole man at the country club. Remember you work for Titleist not Cobra!!

Phil and Ernie no longer use Camerons, Faxon can't make a cut, and Tiger is not really representative of what Scotty wants from his consumers because Tiger has stuck to the exact same gamer since 2000, and Scotty can no longer make victory putters for Tiger. Check eBay and the winning bids for his Circle T's or other Tour/Limited edition putters aren't as high.

 

Scotty relies a lot on a small loyal following, but he is no longer drawing new fans or the casual buyer because of fierce rivalry in the retail market. So Scotty prefers to maximize his profts through his "niche" market of the loyalists, such as offering an 009 at really high profit margins or increasing his profit margins on membership dues by offering less products.

 

While Scotty singlehandedly invented the modern putter collectible market and has a monopoly on it, that market seems to be on the decline for Scotty lately - given the advent of other new competition trying to take a slice out of the pie and making the collectibility thing less deisreable or unique.

 

So I guess the `07 Cameron gear is just a sign of things to come...

I couldn't agree more the recent sale prices on some of the 009's on ebay is scarey, it is like bargain basement tour putter pricing. Also the recent headcover scare with all the fake headcovers popping up may have backed more away from the headcover and other collectibles markets that Cameron has generated. Just look at the last couple headcovers released they didn't sell out for close to a week! Cameron has fallin on his face with this members offering.

Cameron is losing his market in all fronts.

 

In the premium milled putter market, Cameron now has competition from Nike Unitized, Odyssey Black Swirl, Mizuno C-Series, and Ping Redwood - and his retail designs are losing out compared to the new ones. So he is losing his market share there.

 

Cameron is also losing some market to the "technology" putters like Rossa AGSI, White Hot XG, C-Grooves, Rife putters, and the rest.

 

In the collector market, TP Mills is pushing more and more tour and limited edition putters, while Bettinardi has always been there. Now Dave Billings is starting his own line.

 

In the customized putter market, there are independent creators like TP Mills, Tom Slighter, John Byron, and others.

 

It is more common for a former Cameron collector to suddenly move to these other alternatives then it is for say a TP/David Mills fan to suddenly switch to a retail Cameron. So Cameron is no longer as strong as he used to be in terms of sales.

 

With the collector market slowng down (see eBay), Cameron being the marketing genius that he is has found ways to keep his profitability up. First he realizes that the fans he will never lose are the "loyalists." So that is where the most profit is to be made. That is where 009 and GSS comes in. That is also where he created the restoration department. That is also why he has his own studio store where he charges up to six times the price of a grip with his name and logo on it. That is why his membership is still the same price with a much leaner promo package. He is learning to divert his profits to the target market he will never lose, and that is his "loyalists" - although many seem to be dumping their collections on eBay and they are going to low low prices compared to before.

 

So in the end, I think all those tour wins don't equate to strength of sales in the retail market. When Mizuno was #1 all those years in the 90s, were they also the top selling irons in the market? Scotty is the only putter maker with a PGA Tour presence and he can build pros any putters they want and gives them hefty tee up money. So he will naturally be #1 in wins and PGA Tour usage. But in all other markets and tours, he is not the top in usage.
