I think it is time...for lightweight graphite iron shafts.

Recommended Posts

I can't take it any longer. Trying to swing 120g steel is just no fun anymore, even if they are KBS Tour R flex soft stepped once.

So I was looking at the following taper tip shafts. I am 60 and my 150 club is a big 7 iron or smooth 6 iron now.

Help me pick a regular flex shaft.

SK Fiber Tour Performance - $13. Great deal right now.

Aerotech Steelfiber i80 CW - $49. Definitely on the high end.

UST Mamiya MP-6 - $25

XCaliber - $20

Thanks!!!

Like Sean2 said those steel fibers have a great following around here. Personally I switched to a lighter steel shaft on my new clubs this year. When my best friend built them for me he tricked me on them with the demo clubs. It was a drastic change for me I went from a S300 to a FST 90 with as stiff of a tip as he could make it. He is one of the best clubfitters on the beach and he has played a lot of golf with me. I still hit S300s tipped stiff in my wedges though.

You guys are making me feel like a caveman or something. I'm toying with shafting up a set with DGX300, only because I like the extra few grams of the X300 over the X100.

I nearly bought a set of Rifle 7.0 a few years ago, because they spec'd close to 140g. Never quite got around to it.

Graphite driver shafts (for the new stuff) don't really interest me until I get to 80g.

Thanks BIG STU. If I had S300's I would get to the top of my backswing and then just collapse in a heap.
Well my wedges especially my 60* would surely kill you. All my wedges are off my old swingweight scale except the pw. I have to get them heavy to feel them and I manulipuate my wedges with my hands so I have to have heavy wedges. I have about 8 pieces of lead tape in my Scratch 60 and about 5 in my Srixon 56*. In my TM ATV 52* I have a 2 gram weight with 2 4 inch strips of lead tape. The funny thing is that in my vintage sets all my old wedges are heavy enough without tape except for my Staff JP 56. I still hit the S300s in my primary vintage irons which are MacGregor VIPs and my other set of irons is my dad's FC 4000 Black face MacGregors which still have the origional Pro Pel 2 shafts
Well my buddy had to trick me when he built my new clubs. He had played a lot of golf with me over the last 10 years or so. He knows my swing. When we were testing the prototypes he had me hitting a 9 iron shaft unmarked. I loved it hit it good. He had me hit the 7 iron I did not hit it as well. He asked me what does the 7 iron need? I told him about 2 pieces of lead tape. He said do it. I put 2 pieces on where I wanted and hit it fine. He just chuckled and walked off. When he put my new irons together he would not tell me what shafts he had put in them and what frequency they were at untill I played 3 rounds with them. Finally I walked into his shop one day and he asked how they were hitting and I told him honestly fantastic! He said here are your shaft bands to my surprise they were FST 90s. He did tip them stiff though. I do build clubs myself for others but I did learn something for me. I am actually thinking about committing a sacraledge I am thinking about having him frenquency match a set of FST 90s for my old VIPs. BTW I still hit heavy graphite shafts in my metal woods. In my 3 wood and 7 woods I still hit the old UST Pro Force 65 golds with the stiff tips and in my driver in which he built for me from scratch also he has an older Creation Tour Only shaft which is heavy and stiff also.

Someone did something similar to the Stu experiment for me. I had a set of Zevo Z Blades, I was sent a set of shafts that were set up on a frequency this guy didn't want to share, for a blind experiment. I had to be smooth to hit them, played that set for a few months. Gained distance with those irons, but was spinning the ball like crazy; I had big trouble going upwind. He later told me they were set up to be about a 5.0-5.2 equivalent using DG shafts, but he may have been fudging that a bit. :)

Taught me a bit about tempo, certainly.
