Sure, nobody is saying these smaller companies don't make good products.
Some may take the view that the products of these smaller companies are of better quality compared to that of larger equipment companies. This is debatable. I personally don't believe such claims to be the case based on my numerous visits to Japan, China and Taiwan on business for almost 15 years. It's all a question of making something to an industry standard and understanding what the market is prepared to pay for that product. Engineering wise there's not a lot of difference in a product like a wedge no matter who the company making it. Rarely can anyone claim that product A is demonstrably better than another product on the market. The difference is the bigger company can leverage and have the resources to bring to market the product better.

I've been playing Japanese version clubs for years and I've never felt the products of bigger name brands like Bridgestone, PRGR, Srixon, Yamaha, Mizuno, Honma, Maruman, Daiwa, Yonex etc. are any less in quality compared to that of the smaller companies. If there were, it more imagined than real.

Never understood that Miura hype. They look very very nice, true. Have an iron set of CB-301. Will sell it. Not my cup of tea.

For wedges: I really do like Fourteen (MT-28 V3 and V5), PRGR (iD Nabla Tour) and Yamaha's 2015 line is the better Vokey.

There are almost too many great wedges from Japan!

You are paying for the quality of the raw material and workmanship not the design which is usually pretty standard .

Japan's Pargolf magazine did a survey in October of what wedges the top JLPGA women had in their bags. Not a single one of them was using a Muira wedge. Even Lee Bo Mee, the no1 women's golfer on the JLPGA who uses Honma clubs carries 2 Vokey wedges (SM5 51 degrees F grind and SM5 57 degrees S grind). Obviously the pros have a preference and know what works for them.

 

 

Why didn't the retail sm5 look this appealing from address?!
