Impact misses for geeks

Recommended Posts

There have been a couple of discussions here recently about club design, CoG placement, and forgiveness.

For anyone whose interest hasn't been completely exhausted, there's a rather neat graphic and test here http://www.probablegolfinstruction.com/shot_patterns.htm

In terms of what I took from this, a couple of issues stood out.

1. The impact spots are spaced 1/4" apart. The distance loss for missing 1/4" low therefor looks to be about 12 feet. Or, another way of looking at this, this is the distance penalty for having a CoG 1/4" too high.

2. You can also look at this in the context of the CoG placement data reported by Ralph Maltby. His MPF listings show that the overwhelming majority of iron designs have a vertical CoG in a range of +/- 1/8".

I'm not claiming this proves or disproves anyone's thesis, but I think it's an interesting test that quantifies what you're really suffering when you spray impact around the clubface.

One of the rules I've heard bandied around is that you lose something like 10% of carry for missing the sweetspot by 1/2". Misses high and low on the face are punished more harshly than heel and toe misses, but heel/toe misses don't seem to lose anything like 10%, unless that test was carried out with a very short iron at very slow swing speed.

How much does the tape on your handlebars weigh?

It's funny you should ask, as only this year I finally ditched the faithful old drops and cork tape combo and replaced it with ... a ping g30 driver. There is a slight weight penalty, but I just love the power that a 46" handlebar puts at my fingertips and the turbulators have absolutely given me a welcome speed boost.

I will say this. I can get away more with off center hits with my modern forged cavity backs than I can with my old Macgregor blades. The old forged blades will tell on you trust me. That is why when I seriously practice I will take either my CF 4000s or my VIPs with me along with the modern stuff. Of course I don't practice or play everyday like I used to so I am not as good of a ball striker. Actually back in the day I never considered myself a good ball striker anyhow.

All depending no doubt on what's happening with your two mois and cogs and if your shaft is stiff enough, not to mention your mpf (McPedalling Factor).
I can only tip my cap to your mastery of hyperbole, contradiction and the pedantic,an amazing mix.

Good work on the extended metaphor. Now, if you'd like to expand upon your 3 claims of hyberbole, contradiction and pedantry, I'll be able to work out whether I'm being insulted or praised. At the moment, I'm somewhere between a-mused and b-mused.

Feel free to add your thoughts on the information that I posted - assuming that's what brought you to this thread.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
