Golf Shop Today

Recommended Posts

Stopped in golf store today and a gentleman was testing new drivers. Not sure what kind but we started talking and he plays 1987 Hogan Apex PCs. I told him about me going back to "real" woods and playing my Haig Ultras. He and the shop manager looked at me like I was crazy on the woods. Told them the distance loss was minimal. So he continues to hit and I go get my The Haig Lamenated driver and let him hit it. He hit it same distance as his average and dead straight. He then tells me he still has the persimmon woods and that maybe he would get them out and see how he does. Then he goes out and brings in his Hogans and he loved them so much that he had them re-chromed. Nicest set of Apex irons I have seen in a long time. Might have cost the shop a sell but I did buy a SM 3.5 for 140 so don't feel too bad. Maybe should let him get a new driver and bought the persimmon woods from him. If I had only known he had them.

A couple years ago, I was talking to the "pro" at my local Dick's, just passing the time of day. I told him I play my 1969 Haigs, irons and woods, regularly, along with more modern clubs, with pretty much the same scores. He gave me a rehearsed lecture how the new technology did this and that, blah, blah, blah. He actually was a nice fellow, so I just told him I was browsing, and would come back when I had more time.

Fitters and "pros" really focus on the "fit the clubs for the swing" philosophy. For my 2 cents, a proper or close to proper golf swing is the key to good golf. Any decent club will provide good results when hit properly.

Of course, a proper golf swing doesn't sell new golf clubs.

About 15 years ago, I decided to go retro at my club. I showed up with Hogan Apex PCs, and Hogan Apex persimmon woods (loved the speed slot). Found some Slazenger balata balls, and off I went. After 9 holes, I said to myself, "You know, I'm really not as good as I think I am, it REALLY is the equipment," went in the bag room and got my regular set.

I'll take my old clubs out to the range from time to time. No doubt the Hogans feel great, especially my even older Apex II, black cameos, and the sound of a ball being hit by persimmon is hypnotic, but day to day, give me the technology.

[/quote]I can see your point but I just recently took a step or two back. I went back and reshafted my old Mac VIPs. For me it worked. Some of the guys at the club thought I was crazy until yesterday. Had 5 birdies all set up by precision iron shots. Now I do play a toaster driver in my front line gamer set and my fairways are metals but they are old especially by today's standards (see my WITB signature at bottom). I do play real vintage some with my persimmons and all. Actually I can play pretty good with the summer hard roll off the gold (senior) tees with the persimmons though

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
