GameGolf - interpreting data to improve

Recommended Posts

Any GameGolf users out there good at interpreting their club performance/insights and determine what part of their game needs the most work? I am just a hair worse than bogey golf. At this point I feel I make pretty good contact and have solid swing mechanics (lots of softball/baseball background). I miss about half the fairways (slicing drives), and only reach about 1/4th GIR. Its hard for me to determine if my woes off the tee are hurting me more or my iron play.

Obviously I need work on a little bit of everything. I play about 2-3 rounds/week and don't do enough work on the practice greens/driving range. You can check out my GameGolf profile here. I hit my irons pretty far, but I'm wondering if at this point I should get fitted for new sticks. Being 6'4" I don't think that my first set of irons fit all that great, would love to hear your results from getting fitted for new irons.

I guess I'm turning to the WRX community to see how I can improve. I am taking lessons and working on some things, my short game has improved a ton because I know distances for all my wedges to get relatively close to the hole from around the green. At this point I am leaning towards new irons that fit me a little better with continued lessons and more dedicated practice.

So i have quite a few rounds in but not very good at gleaning useful information. Though the most handy bit is under ; Explore > Compare, then click on Benchmarks. Then select the score range that matches your goal.

Now you should have a pretty good roadmap from a macro standpoint on where your game needs to get to achieve that scoring goal.

Unfortunately the things they compare don't really give you a good idea where your problems are. E.g. GIR, do you have a low GIR because you had problems off the tee or because of your approach game? Fairways stat is pretty meaningless as well, you might just be off by a few yards in light rough (hardly worth mentioning). You would then think I have to improve my drive when the real problem is e.g. that you can't hit your irons.
I believe they are working on better stats but for now I would just look at your shots of the tee. Where are they grouped - maybe you have to adjust your aim a bit? No point in aiming straight down the middle when you know you tend to slice it. Tee up on the right side of the tee box and aim at the left side of the fairway. That gives you the widest margin of error.

Also look at your approach stats (under insights). From what distance is your <15yards stat going down? Which clubs do you have to improve? Where do you miss it? Do you miss most short - play with your median distances from the Club performance page and not your Sunday best distance! Do you miss it more to the left? Then don't aim at the centre of the green but more to the right.

Getting your GIR up is the most important thing as there is a good correlation between GIR and Score. At the moment GameGolf can't tell you direct whether your drive or your approach is damaging your GIR stat but hopefully they will come up with something similar to Strokes Gained at some point.

There are some feature request on http://myexperience.gamegolf.com/ relating to Strokes Gained or stats for a certain course (know your problem holes). E.g. there are some ideas to show all tee shots for a certain hole. If you haven't done yet, sign up at myexperience.gamegolf.com and vote for the issues you think are most important.

ParHunter gave excellent advice...

One of the things that I have been looking at is my trends per hole. I know that there are some holes on the course I normally play that give me problems. I have started looking at what the trend of my shots are on those holes (i.e. should I hit a 3W or iron to get it in play or is it about my iron play).

I think you can get good information about where your misses are with irons. I always though my main issue was missing greens left (I draw the ball) but the stats say my miss is short. Started pulling a longer club and starting to hit a better percentage.

Fairways hit can be a misleading, but again I think you need to know what your miss is and how it is affecting the rest of your game.

Game Golf just gives you a better way to look at the data...you need to figure out how to turn it into information.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
