Cracked Cleveland Comp

Crown has Cracked????
Hey guys, first post, I've been looking for a forum like this for a while. I've been hitting my Comp 460 for about 4 months now(Play 3 or 4 rounds/week and 100's of balls/week on the range). About a month ago I noticed what I thought at first was a chip from an iron in the crown of the club. I always keep it covered so I wasn't sure how it got there, after a quick wax job I noticed that the paint had chipped because of a hairline crack across the top of club closest to the face. Sure enough I somehow managed to pop the composite top, or at least crack it.

I'm not saying that I am a competition long driver as I haven't ever had my club head speed checked. But I consistently carry the ball 275+ with my long drives in the 330 range including roll (I'm in Indiana). I've been playing with the broken driver for the past month. The cleveland rep is a little slow to stop by the course and I've had 2 or 3 tournament a week that I need the driver for, broken or not.

Has anybody had the same problems? Is it going to happen again or was it just a bad driver from the start? Thanks for the input!

I have one that cracked too and I've heard of 2 others with same problem. Right along the top faceline above the sweetspot. You can get a replacement but don't know how long it'll take. I replaced my cracked comp with Launcher 400 while I wait for a new one.

It doesn't seem to affect my comp's performance though.

I called Cleveland direct when I first noticed it, they told me that it was not totally uncommon. They did tell me that I needed to have my local proshop send it in. Since I play or hit balls everyday I just can't go without it for very long. So I've been trying to hold out until the cold weather gets here.

I decided to try Cleveland again to see if I could get it turned around faster if they let me send the driver direct. I just got off the phone with Brianna and of course she started with "we only deal with proshops direct, you will need to send it through them". I told her that I was hoping to turn the club around in a week or less so that I could have it back for the weekend tournaments. She finally gave in and gave me a RA#. She gave me her extension and told me to call with a tracking number once I shipped so that she could make sure the club was rushed through. I'll have to wait till next Monday to send it out, but should have it back before the end of the week. Thanks guys for the help, and thanks Cleveland!

Mine did the same. I hear ya. I have a SS in the 125-130 range with a ball speed 165-175. The comp is the straightest driver I have ever hit. I am still playing with mine though as I have not seen a dramatic drop in distance :idhitit: I am waiting till winter till I do anything about it. I can say there is little chance I will be playing a Comp next season. oh yeah, the total length of "damage" is about 2".

God Bless

Jer

I took my 5 wood straight to their headquarters and they replaced it no problem. Shipped it back to me for free also, took about a week. The only problem I had was my clubmaker used a longer ferrule than cleveland and the paint removed on the NV shaft from the older, longer ferrule was showing. Other than that, the club was perfect.

I just got an email from cleveland to test out some new driver they are trying on friday. I will do a full post on it and hopefully snag a pic or two!!!

wow..a new driver already...this is interesting..what happened with your 5 wood that cracked also??? i remember the new titleist offerings had cracking issues in europe earlier this year

48858[/snapback]

I was hitting my 5 wood really good during that particular range session. I heard a crack, snapple, pop kind of noise for about 4 or 5 shots. I look at the face and there was a crack from the center of the sweetspot to the upper hosel area. Then it cracked agani from the sweetspot to the bottom of the heel. I still hit the ball well over 240 yards, which was good for my 5 wood. It just had a weird sound to it. When cleveland took it back they showed me the repair from for the club. I guess they outsource the actualy manufacturing and assembly to different steel companies. And on the inside of the head they have the name of the company, batch#, that sort of thing and keep track of each defective product. So I guess it was normal to crack it, as long as they replace it for free it is just an inconvenience to go without a 5 wood for 2 weeks or so.
