Uh Oh, what'd I do to my new Scratch JLM/SFU 58*?

Behold!!!
Hey, give me credit. I hit it 9 times before I took any metal off ;) :pardon:

I'm a driver/slider but bought the SFU mainly because I like the initials. :partytime2: My wife went to Simon Fraser University if you can dig that. The extra meat in the back provides the bounce for diggers and is amenable to grinding. Basically I took a much of the bounce off the trailing edge (as you can see the ° sign is worn then radiused the leading edge.

Shafted with Accra 5.5 soft stepped to creat my DYNOSPINNA wedge shaft. D4 at 35 3/8", Lamkin Crossline Black.

Quite honestly I haven't done alot of grinding as I don't have space for the proper setup. I am content to look at the amazing work of Joe K along with some very talented artists on various golf forums. I did alittle testing in my backyard and the wedge sets up and plays great so far....though my lawn looks alittle worse for wear.

I'll say anyone looking to try Scratch wedges should not hesitate. They are incredibly soft and solid at impact. I've never felt anything like it. My Mizuno MPT is a decent wedge but always lacked feel. Now with the ground SFU, I have the best of both worlds.

I hereby present the DYNO STFU STANLEY CUP GRIND!

Its on the left in picture 1 beside std SFU and on the right in picture 2. Look for the ground degree sign in 58°. I know it's hard to see but there is a huge difference in playability.

Thanks man. I guess it's alittle subtle in the pics but I'm very pleased with how the grind blends in....took off about 4 grams of metal and a large portion of the trailing edge bounce. I ground using a coarse Scotchbrite belt so it naturally left a satin finish. I have 3 grades which I use to match borethru finishes. It's a very special feeling wedge....makes my MPT feel like it's made of zinc.

Taper Accras are pretty tough to find. There are some around but not alot of sets were swaged then sent to dealers for stock. Even if they have them, they are to be sold installed.

Great work and nice looking wedge. The wedges are that much nicer considering that you don't do too much grinding, it looks awesome. I think the feeling is better when you nail a great shot on the course and know your work had something to do with it. Great job once again on the wedges and keep up the great work.

Appreciate the kind words.

Joe's thread really illustrates the artistry and craftsmanship that can be incorporated into a grind. I'm pretty good at what I do (clubmaking) but Joe's grinds are another level. Keerazy M-grind/P-grind. It's all above my head....whooooosh.....but I'm glad I can do alittle work to make my own suit my swing.

btw...Welcome to Golfwrx :pardon: :partytime2:

Every time I read these types of threads about Scratch wedges I regret selling mine more and more. :partytime2:

P, that turned out great...not to mention the DYNOSPINNA shaft sounds KILLA.

Again, nice work!

Thanks ;)

I'll be hitting the course for the first time in a month tomorrow so we'll see how they stack up in real live action. I'll be using the 53* TNC with Accra Tour Steel and the ground 58* above. The feel is very soft. Love the squared shape and the straight leading edge blending into heel/hosel transition. I'm real particular about wedge shape and really really dig how these look. The MPT looks ok but only after I took a bunch of metal off the leading edge to straighten it out. It feels like zinc compared to the Scratch tho.

For everyone's info, 'spinnaz' are little else than stiff shafts cut really soft. :pardon: But it's fun to make it sound more than it is :cheesy:

Dude. I played yesterday for the first time in a long while. Suffice to say, fairways and greens were elusive so I had ample opportunity to test the efficacy of the Scratches. Had a couple 90 yard partial 53*'s. Performed great...swing was ok on those. Fairways were dry but not hard. Didn't get to pull 53 too much otherwise. 58*.....used both out of sand (which was more like gravel then sand) and made some pretty good outs. One bunker shot was a little longer so I hit it with the face squared up....ball spit out and stopped quickly. Other sandies with open face came out fine too with little digging. Flops from around the green were straight forward like they are with my Miz MPT which says alot as I love the grind on that MPT. Straight on low hooded chips came off as expected (even a little lower which I like) with supreme feel.

They are without doubt, the smoothest and softest wedges I've ever hit. I'm very very pleased. The 58* was very versatile...even better than I thought it could be.

Dyno,

Nice looking work, I was thinking of getting some Scratch wedges also, how do they spin comapared to a spin milled. I don't need mega spin but I don't want the ball to run out on short chips either. Thanks in advance

Dyno, that grind looks great, very nicely done! I used to play a set of Scratch wedges too a while back, never really got comfortable with them though. I didn't like the transition from the hosel to the topline, just looked weird to me. Could you maybe snap a pic of the wedge at address, I would like to see if this is something they've changed in their new line.

I haven't hit the spin milled and frankly I don't pay alot of attention to spin...I prefer alittle runout if anything. I think the Scratches will do you fine....the grooves are good and sharp and didn't seem to lack spin in a noticeable way. We talking about 1 round though so it's hard to say.

I've noticed some awkward wedges in that regard too. Never caught my eye with the JLM....looks fine in that regard. Please note the B-Hitter dime size +2 hcp wear spots :D

Hope this helps
