El Dorado and other gold

How many of you have had true gold fever? oblivious to anything else excepting that flash of color in the bottom of a pan - bright yella gold. Up until now I've only seen one friend who had it so bad we had to physically remove him from the bedrock spoil which was producing match-head sized alluvial nuggets.

I've only ever had gold fever over a plate of gumbo (that's another story)

Anyway, today I experienced golf fever. We have just shifted location and I was checking out one of the local recycle stores. Just one bin of old clubs in the sports area, nothing to get excited about, except at the back of the bin I saw two clubs, a very rusty wedge head on a tidy shaft and a blade putter that screamed "OLD!" VERY OLD!. It was dirty, dented, grip in tatters and just as I was trying to decypher the words on the back of the blade, the shop owner yelled out "Time to leave folks, we're closing now". They had to drag me away kicking and screaming - I even offered to pay double the asking price but the till was closed.

I'll be back tomorrow - just keep out of my way

yup, never had a more delicious gumbo before or since, iirc I had two refills and was out the back in the kitchen licking the pot when security dragged me away.

That roux was so mean it made mean look like a sissy.

I'm a good cook and I often do a gumbo during the winter but I could never match that one and it wasn't the tourist lily-livered gumbo but the hot and sassy genuine Cajun article. At the moment I have two crab pots out (mud crabs - the big mothers) and when a couple of males show up (15cm across the carapace) it going to be gumbo time. I already have prawns, fish and shellfish in the fridge.

The rusty club with the good shaft & grip turned out to be a Cleveland. I have plenty of wedges.

The putter revealed itself as a Slazenger - Nicklaus MK2 - this one I am keeping. It needs a new

shaft and grip which I will do. You can see that the yellow paint around the inset bear is still showing.

As far as age of the putter goes, I don't know yet. The photos don't show the soft golden brass color of the club head. There is gold in them thar bins.

 

edit: I relented and bought a 60* Dunlop wedge today

I have never seen a Slazenger Nickalus club before. Thanks for posting. It looks like it could do well in battle.

I would cast my ballot for "shrimp & grits" if not for the entire states food, at least for The Lowcountry. Has a lot in common with a gumbo in that one can have their own spin on the type of roux, and the auxiliary ingredients, if any, used. My favorite is made by a friend of mine from Dublin, yes, that Dublin, an ex executive chef at one of the high brow eateries that after he aquired his capital started a catering business and has now opened the most authentic Irish Pub in the state as well.

After retiring from the military I worked for a company around Narleans for 20 years. Have had gumbo in "the Quarter" and up and down the bayous.

Have always been partial to fish soups and chowders. Roux is the heart of a good gumbo, timing it so it's not too light or dark is an art which I've haven't achieved yet. I like both Cajun and Creole versions, Creole for my friends and family and Cajun for me because I like a bit of heat. Cannot always get fresh okra here though which is a bit of a pain, I might try to grow it. Frogmore stew which you will be well familiar with is my kind of food - tasty, chunky, unpretentious damn good tucker. Lot of good food comes out of the south (and music). Getting back to the golf, I'll add the putter to my vintage bag and try it out next round, I have a good collection of usable vintage clubs now. I was in the military too - Navy radioman 9 yrs. Picked up another two clubs today - good condition PGF Kel Nagle Chesterfield (genuine American Persimmon) #1 wood with original white grip and a Dunlop 60* wedge also in good condition. Total outlay $7. Think I've cleaned out most of the charity places around here !. Also looked at a Confidence Visa #1 wood which had a very open face but I think this is an el cheapo brand and I probably have enough #1 woods to go on with.
