1970 Wilson X-31 4300 3-Wood, 4-Wood

“Proud leader of the 1970 Wilson line – the exciting X-31. Styled with a graceful head design to enable players to hit from tight lies and produce an easier playing club. The powerful Strata-Bloc® heads are finished in glistening ebony and Aqua-Tite® treated to seal out moisture while maintaining proper balance. The wide cream and black Epoloc® face insert is designed for more effective ball impact. The revolutionary Power-Groove® shaft is available in either aluminum alloy or lightweight steel alloy. Both shafts are scientifically designed to compensate for the change in weight between individual club heads – thus producing a truly matched set of clubs. Each set is registered.”

Around ten years ago, I saw a set of lefty (I'm lefty) aluminum shafted X-31's, irons and woods, at Goodwill. I didn't really know anything about them, so I passed on them.

A little later, a pal of mine gave me a righty set. missing an iron(?), with aluminum shafts, and a nice staff bag. Someone had left it with his garbage cans on the curb of the street. I cleaned them up and gave them to a niece's fiancée. I don't know whether he ever played them, for he bought a new boxed set soon after. (I'd rather have played the X-31's)

The couple lived in a house I owned for a few months. When they left, the BF left the three wood, and a couple irons, along with a other junk clubs others had given him, in the cellar. I never asked him, why he left 3 or 4 clubs, and took the rest. (I don't particularly like the guy, so I don't really talk to him much. He must have cleaned garages for extra money, for he filled up my basement with junk. I had to clean out his junk.) I took all his junk clubs to Goodwill, including the X-31's.

Anyhow, on cleaning the freebee set of righties, and hitting them opposite hand, I'm sorry I didn't buy them at the thrift shop. Pretty good clubs.

Enjoy!

Wriggles-

Are you looking for a set of Aluminum shafted woods?

No thanks, I have a set of Haigs, woods and irons, with aluminum shafts. I play them very regularly.

Last year, I had a few MacGregor Tourney clubs, also with aluminum shafts. Someone had left them for garbage at my home course. The driver and three wood were laminated, and had aluminum inserts. The clubs cleaned up very nicely. I kept looking for the rest of the set to show up, but no. I passed them on to a neighbor.

Thanks again for asking.

PS: I just was browsing the Pittsburgh Craig's list. Many really nice sets with bags for $10-20. It's amazing how the climate of golf has changed. Everyone now has to have the latest and greatest stuff to play golf. When I was young, a new set of clubs was a lifetime purchase. Golf was a game, not a life experience.

Play well!

That last paragraph is oh so true sad but true. I ran into that quite a bit 10 years ago when we had the golf store. Being in a tourist area most of these tourist golfers have the latest and greatest. If they do not have it when they get here they hit the PGA SS or Golfsmith pull out the plastic and get it. You can not count how many times I have heard it here especially when I play strictly vintage "If you had a NEW set of (insert brand name) clubs like mine you could really play"

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
