3 wood shaft for driver

I am not a techy , but I need advice and information.

I hit my 3 wood great with consistent results.

I hit my driver erratically with inconsistent results.

Even when I hit my driver well, the ball goes about the same distance as the three wood shot.

both clubs have essentially similar regular flex graphite shafts.

obviously, the driver shaft is a few inches longer.

QUESTION: What happens if I have a 3 wood shaft put into my driver? Can it be done? How does a 3 wood shaft differ from a driver shaft cut down to a similar length?

Look forward to your advice. To improve my game ( 14 index) I need to have a longer and consistent tee shot.

No big difference except perhaps weight and length. You hit your 3 wood better because it has more loft and is shorter in length. You should try shortening your driver and you will probably hit it better. The only problem with this is swingweight. You will have to add weight back to the head to make it feel the same as before you shortened it. Others on this site know more about swingweighting, so you will probably get some advice on that shortly.

There is really no such thing as a "3 wood shaft" today.

 

All weight and manner of shafts are installed in both drivers and fairway woods.

 

If you take a shaft OUT of a 3 wood and install it in a driver, it will play stiffer than the driver shaft if it was tip trimmed for a 3 wood - and of course it will be shorter...

 

If you want the same shaft that's in your 3 wood installed in your driver that will be possible - however it will not generally be tip trimmed first and you need to decide how long to build it.

 

In general people hit their 3 woods better than their drivers for two reasons:

 

1) Loft.

 

The higher loft means less side spin and more back spin - the ball goes straighter.

 

2) Length.

 

The shorter shaft means better contact in the center of the face.

 

Have a driver built with higher loft than what you are playing now - 12 to 14 degrees - and at 44" instead of 45" and you'll certainly hit it straighter than your current driver and more like your 15 degree, 43" 3 wood.
