First time clubs buyer....HELP NEEDED!

how to pick???

Guys,

I am tall 6'5" newbie and have been playing with my "no name" half set of clubs till then.....as i started to play more and more on the course i wanted to buy a full set of clubs (drivers, irons, woods...)

I am currently having lesson with a coach but...

1. How should I pick a driver to buy when i don't really know how to hit one in the first place? (I need to have one to learn with the coach anyways)

2. For picking both the driver and irons, is outdoor fitting really important? or indoor fitting in a store like golfsmith would do the job? (I am a big guy playing with graphite shaft but thinking about shifting to steel....my pro shop guy at the range in manhattan might not have the equipment to track those data like stroke speed and spin rate, etc)

For someone of your height, a fitting is kind of important. I think Golfsmith and GG are pretty good places to go and get started. Tell them your story and start hitting some clubs. There are plenty of decent brands you can buy that won't break the bank. And a used set might also be a good way to go as well. You really can't start picking out clubs without hitting them so go take a few for a test drive.

yea i tried out a couple different irons and felt like the taylormade R7 is the way to go.....i think it might not be that hard for me to pick since i know my lie angle and shaft length adjustment i can pretty much make up my mind easily..

 

what i am more concerned is the driver and woods....seems to me that there are so many factors that would affect the performance (loft, spin rate, etc.) i still need to have my first one to learn with my coach. Without any previous experience hitting those, how can i decide which one is good for me?

^^ use high lofts for one thing, and regular shafts, I would also get one of those thigs to cover the top/ upper half of the driver and three woods, you may pop some up and noone likes a-hole marks on their club
