Play It Forward

Recommended Posts

I couldn't really find a good spot to post this so I'll start a new thread for those hooking others up with gear, both vintage and modern.

Last night I sent my BiL home with a decent set of modern woods, a rescue club and a putter that became redundant last year in my rotation. I was thinking of putting this stuff up on eBay to see what I might be able to get for it then decided that the good Samaritan route would do more for me than a few dollars padding the PayPal account.

It was actually more self-serving than that as we have managed to get our in-laws starting to curl, so now the objective is to get them playing at golf. It's funny how my SiL was dead set against this two or three years ago and has now changed her tune. Perhaps she has come to appreciate the social aspects of being involved in these two sports.

This is now the second relative that I have outfitted in the past month as my DiL has also decided that she wants to take golf lessons, so the club stash has now thinned considerably. My wife is quite pleased with that and has come to accept that four grab and go sets isn't totally out of line when neatly stored as they are now. Must resist the temptation to acquire more as I still have a bag full of odds and ends that most likely won't see much in the way of playing time, if any.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Good on ya OP! I've given a few sets away myself, one to a guy that needed to find something to occupy his time that wasn't drugs, and I can't think of a better rehab sport than golf. Another to a fellow who had his clubs stolen. Giving and selling cheap both help grow the sport, more importantly they put a beginner or typically less seasoned golfer, in contact with you. (the rest of us are typically looking for either the rare and coveted or the specific). I think this is the biggest benefit to the game and it's growth. I think the biggest roadblock for most people <30 is the expense vs perceived value and speed of improvement. I made the mistake, I went and spent 250 bucks on a box of clubs that did not fit me, hampered my swing and it's improvement, and were generally pieces of s***. I now have just over that amount invested in my modern bag, and I am in love with all 14. Beginners need to be shown that the dough doesn't have to go to the equipment , but rather lessons, greens fees, and buckets. They need somebody that gives a damn enough about the game and the rest of them to show them the way. That rock solid gear can be had for peanuts, because they don't have to buy into the big oems crap.

Another year, another couple of bags to move. I've decided I'm going to sell the frontline set that I played most of my rounds with last year. They're a great set of classic modern clubs, but with my back issues are likely going to prove to be a bit too much for me going forward. Time to let someone else enjoy them. I'm also going to unload a nice playable set of vintage blades and woods. I may be wrong, but I'm thinking that it will be easier to sell a nice full set, bag and all, rather than try and piece stuff out bit-by-bit. Play it forward and let someone else benefit.

It all works out--- I have given away a lot of clubs especially classics and in return have had some gracious fellow WRXers send me clubs for just postage to fill out sets. Had one gracious Wrxer send me a whole set of pristine Mac VIPs and that is what I built my infamous set of Bastardized Macs with Hogan Apex shafts from. And my friend Bear has given me a lot of new modern stuff over the years and I give him stuff too. I gave him the rechromed 59 FCs because he liked them. A guy was over at his place the other night and saw the Macs and told him "I bet Stu ain't saw those yet" Bear said yes he has he was the one who gave them to me. The guy told him (LOL) If you got those Macs from Stu you better frame them he does not get rid of Macs or Toney Penna woods. That is far fetched because I have given away sets of Macs before but like I said it all works out

STU,

I firmly believe that you are the epitome of "paying it forward". Kudos to you my friend...
