So pretty that I don't even want to hit them

Recommended Posts

After playing with my hogan laminates, I really wanted to try out some persimmon. While waiting for them to arrive, I replaced the apex 4 shafts in my apex with project x 6.5. Well the Louisville persimmon arrived and I'm going to try and at least hit the range tomorrow. After looking at these woods, I am having second thoughts about hitting them. They just look so good! They have x100 shafts in them but don't quite feel that stiff. Guess I'll find out!

Don't hit range rocks with those. They're too nice.

FWIW, when the blades and lumber come out I've been bagging a couple of PB Citation laminates that I keep on hand for regular play/practice. My persimmons need a bit of TLC, so they won't see any range time at all. I'll play them with a low compression ball, but that's about it.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I keep reading mixed opinions with the persimmon. Some say I can break them. Others say they will be fine. I probably should throw the hogan laminate in the bag just to be safe.

If your persimmons are pristine then you night want to think about what you play them with. If they're tough like mine, then you're thinking in a bit different terms with preservation in mind. I play laminates because I can just go ahead and play whatever's in the bag and not worry.

Man alive, these are wood clubs not tissue paper! They are playable, but depending upon competition, discretion maybe required.

Those woods are beautiful for sure. I always did like a black finished wood for play. Truthfully if I owned them I would be on the fence as far as playing them. I only have 3 woods I refuse to hit One is that beautiful Penna that has never been hit and one is an older Mac and one is a beautiful Izett

Beautiful woods. I'd worry about playing them, too. BUT, they are golf clubs, meant to be played and enjoyed.

At my age, (64) I'd play them if I bought them. Thirty years ago, I would have foolishly just looked at them. Too much stuff out there, that was "Too good to use." at yard sales and such.

A happier medium is in order. Gently using a softer ball and no range time will help. Polish with Johnson's paste wax every time you play.

Your clubs will get a bit scuffed up, but with care, will age gracefully.

Enjoy!

Went to the range and hit a large bucket. It's a cool 105 out today. Out of the 100 or so balls I hit (used all my clubs), 50 were perfect high draws. 20 were decent, a little off line but won't kill you. 15 were not so great. Worm burners, dribblers, stingers, but still playable. Finally I had 15 or so huge hooks that were just awful. Most of them came with the woods. Once I slowed my swing down and started playing everything in the middle of my stance and back, the shots really started to come. I like the feel of the persimmon slightly better and when "hit on the screws" appears to go slightly further, but the since the difference is minimal, having a full bag of hogans is more ideal for me.

Definitely need more practice but golf is finally fun again!

Side note, my new old hogan putter is pure butter. For someone who has the twitches with a putter in his hand, I rolled in a few 20+ footers.

I have found more consistent success that way as well. I also do better with a wooden driver if I tee it down a fair bit.

Congrats on finding a putter a putter you love.

Happiness with what you're playing always leads to better playing! Enjoy!
