my stack and tilt thread

so heres the backround...Ive been struggling with my full swing for quite sometime now. when its been on Ive been deadly accurate, but when its off, and it doesn't take much to throw it off...holy mother of mercy is it off.

so last night i decided to give the stack and tilt a try with my limited knowledge base.

:beach:

i haven't hit my irons so solid in probably 7 years. it was unreal. I'm still not completely sold on the driver/3 wood S&T, but thats probably because I'm doing it wrong...so.

but I'd like to hear from others who have tried the stack and tilt and get some suggestions/advice and feedback.

It took me 2-3 driving range trips to work out the "S&T" with the driver. I still fight the hooks, but that's because I have a tendency to slip into a swing plane that's too horizontal. It is the same swing with the driver as the other clubs, you just put the ball forward in the stance and try to get used to the new feel (IMO). After I started using this "method", I also gained a lot more consistency, and I'm now working on clubhead lag and gaining a TON of distance on all my clubs.

It bothers me that everyone calls this the "stack and tilt." Sure, I picked it up off of the golf digest website like many others, but it's nothing revolutionary really - it's simply making something that's been complicated for years and years into the simple thing that it really is: Twist torso to store energy . . . release energy. You don't have to worry about any of the things that get into your head.

Marshall,

We really need to get together and hit some balls. I have been working on the basic stack and tilt concepts with my swing with very similar results. My iron play has never been so straight and solid, and it is fantastic with the wedge game. My knowledge is also VERY limited, my main thought is trying to stay more on top of the ball... I am hitting it VERY straight with the driver, but shorter, and you KNOW how short I was already! :beach: :good: I am playing some of the best golf I have ever played using the basic concept.

could you ever make it on tour or to like plus 3-5 using the stack and tilt>?

any good websites that explain how to use it properly..thanks

Yes and Yes.

Several tour pros use the S&T, Aaron Baddeley being one of them. The S&T has several PGA tour wins and Nationwide I believe.

Go to Golf Digest's website and search for stack and tilt. There is a very lengthy article about the swing.

The Golf Digest Article only describes a very little piece of the stack and tilt

Eventually, someone is going to have to lay this theory out in a book. It's not exactly feasible for interested golfers to "find" a S&T qualified instructor. There are so many facets to golf and how the S&T approach apply that aren't covered in the GD article. If these guys truely believe in their swing theories.....they need to preserve this in a comprehensive book or video. Right now only a few Tour pros have access. The rest of us are relegated to the GD article and what we can glean from the internet.....and the internet is filled with keyboard pros that many times think they do, but don't really know what they are talking about.

RwF is waiting on P&B to come off the hip with the goods.....

There are qualified instructors, other than B n' P who could tell you all about the stack and tilt, Dana Dahlquist, and David Orr come to mind...couldn't tell you B n' P plans about video or book but O'Grady has been expected to make this information public for years...until then...

Marshall,

It really isn't fair for the rest of us if you hit it straight. You already hit it by us about 50 yards, and now straight too. Com'on give us a chance. :beach:

In all honesty, everytime I try S&T it feels very reverse pivot to me, so I must be doing something wrong.

LOL

well so far Ryan, i've actually LOST distance with the driver, but i've picked up TONS of consistency. its still not there yet, but i'm gonna work on it with Kev tomorrow so hopefully we can get it ironed out.

i know Kev's got a decent understanding of it, and i'm getting there as well so if you want to, i'd be happy to help ya out.

Marshall,

I really don't have a very strong idea of the full concept. What I have been doing is working on the BASIC concept. I have stopped moving to the right side on the backswing to a position where I was getting stuck. I am starting with a little more weight on my left side, keeping it there, and then releasing towards the target. I feel like I am staying on top of the ball with my irons, covering it, and hitting it really solid and straight. I would love to learn more!

Stack and tilt deals with combining the correct amount of horizontal and lateral shoulder motion...those touring pros using the stack and tilt are using it becuase the center of their shoulder turn is too far to the right (bringing it outside of the right hip if u drew a vertical line from the top of the sternum down, for most players) the tilt is an exxxagerated feel of leaning to the left to "stack" the centers of gravity...the feel of being on the left side is greater in the shorter irons because there is more lateral motion on a steeper plane than on a flatter plane...so there is more horizontal motion and less weight on the left side for longer clubs...there is also matching plane shifts and other components involved...no two stack and tilts are alike
