Older guys playing in Scotland

Hi folks,

 

I am close to being old. Reality is:

 

1. I want to go to Scotland

2. My game is not as good as it used to be, can't hit it far like I used to.

 

Is there hope that I can find courses in Scotland where I can play? Just as a crazy question, do they have multiple sets of tees at courses like St. Andrews or are you playing from one set of tees at 6699 yards?

 

I guess I probably waited too long to go to Scotland, but family and job are/were more important when I was younger.

Take a caddie and they'll recommend the appropriate tee usage as the round gets going and they see your abilities.

I can't recall any course I played there not having multiple sets of tees. If anything, they tend to suggest a set of tees more forward than not to keep the pace of play good based on handicap.

My experience on a lot of courses in Scotland is:

 

1. They tend to put the tees pretty far forward to keep it moving. Last year on the Old Course, the tees were set at 6299. It played about 5800. Don't worry about anything at 6900, they won't even let you go back there.

2. Bounce and roll tend to mean that any course you play will play shorter than you expect, because you don't have to fly it all the way. The exception is the wind. If the wind is against you, it can get tougher.

3. Far fewer elevation changes than are typical in the US. Flat equals shorter.

 

Overall though, don't worry about length. You'll have a great time.
