Sonartec MD hybrid - which shaft??

Johann

Recommended Posts

I am considering buying 2 Sonartec MD hybrids (19*and 21* or 21*and 23*) as replacement for 5 wood and 3 iron.

I have tried the MD 23* with the Sonartec UST iROD shaft in regular flex. It was really easy to hit this club long and straight, but the shaft is quite stout and launches relatively low, certainly much lower than my TM mid rescues with steel shaft! But I found this club much straighter than the TM which has a built in drawbias!

While I do want a shaft which launches lower than the TMs as they tend to ballon on me, the iROD in reg.flex is very low for my swing speed (driver ss: 95-97 mph, 6 iron ss: 85-88 mph!).

Has anyone tried the Sonartec MDs with either Grafalloy ProLaunch HYBRID or Aldila NVS HYBRID? Which weights?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Johann

both shafts would be perfect.. i have the 19 md with nvs 85 stiff.. it couls replace my 5wd and at times i do switch them in and out of the bag.. the 23 would probably be the 3iron replacement.. all depends on you of course-- swing etc.. but both shafts do allow for a higher flight and better feel.. the MD's are solid and will make a nice addition tot he bag..

I currently play two MD's - a 17* and a 21*, both shafted with the NVS-85 Hybrid shaft. Over the past season, they have become my favorite clubs. They just work for me. I'm even thinking about picking up the 15*, 19*, and 23* over the winter...

I've talked to a lot of people who seem to avoid the NVS for fear it will launch too high, but for my particular swing style / mechanics, it has been perfect. Crisp, snappy shaft, nice medium trajectory, killer off the tee or deck -- just brings out the best in that particular club, IMHO. Of course your results may vary.

Good luck with it.

I don't think your launch angle is a result of the shaft. While yes the iRod shafts are stout, the one being used by SonarTec is not the high kick/low launch Utility iron shaft by UST. Rather SonarTec is using the low kick/high launch Long iron shaft, which also happens to be lighter than the previously mentioned shaft...they use it so it will appeal to more golfers. I know this because when I ordered my 2nd MD, the shaft stated Long iron, so I called SonarTec and they told me no difference than their original, UST was out of the customized OEMs that they normally supply SonarTec. Your low launch is probably a product of both your swing and club head design. The MD is designed to have a low boring launch to pierce the wind since its center of gravity is higher than other hybrids on the market...in fact that was a knock against it in reviews in Golf Digest and Golf Magazine by some mid/high handicappers, though it was still highly recommended. So if you want to try a different shaft, the ProLaunch would probably be a good choice as it definitely has a High Launch/Low kick.

I personally love the MDs as I have tried others which I hit way too high with too much draw due to the offset, whereas the MDs sets up square. I can hit this thing high and low whenever I want...with incredible distance.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
