Billy Casper

As very young PGA pro wannabe's, we would pretend that we were one of the premier golfers before teeing off. Whomever was closest to the hole on a 25 ft. putt on the practice green, got to choose first who they wanted to be that day (and so on). Hate to date myself but the names included Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Don January, a young guy named Jack Nicklaus and Billy Casper, among others. I still remember to this day, my father would say "if Casper is in the top 10 teeing off on Sunday he's my favorite to win". Honored to have rescued these 1,3,4 Billy Casper Shot Maker woods with aluminum shafts and leather grips. Wilson must have had the top leather supplier in the world. Gentle wash with saddle soap followed by an application of Lexol and these grips are absolutely like new again. Could use some help on dating the Shot Makers, I'm thinking late 60's when aluminum shafts were in vogue.

 

During this GW barnstorming tour of Rochester MN I also picked up a 2-8 set of Spalding Top Flite Professional Sychro's (1961-62 vintage) and a Walter Hagen Honey Boy 8 iron - which I am guessing dates to somewhere in the 1930's. Leather grip once again restored very nicely with saddle soap and Lexol application.

Snorg...very nice set of Wilson Billy Casper woods and irons. The Walter Hagen sand wedge is interesting too. Is it(SW) a punch dot face or lined?

Correct .... the late sixties for aluminium shafts. I have a set of vintage Dynapowers with leather grips from that era and I concur with the superior quality. Still like new after 50 years.

It is an 8 iron and punch faced. Shaft and grip are excellent condition, the head shows some wear and pitting, but not terrible.

Scott, those Spalding Top-Flites have a "BH POWER THRUST" toe-like appearance to them from what I can see...

They don't have quite the relief that the power thrust irons have or the earlier (54-56) Spalding Top Flites have. I wish that previous owners had taken a bit more care of these.....but now the hunt starts to find the rest of the set.

Do yourself a big favor and trash the Lexol and get 100% Neatsfoot Oil, it's pressed from the hooves of cows, horses etc.. Lexol with eventually dry out the leather.

Thanks. I've got a bottle of it that I use on baseball gloves to soften the leather, I"ll try it.
