Midsize grip - change swing weight?

This is easily the most likely IMO. Our connection with the club in this way is as overlooked as it is underrated.

What the swing weight scale might read after a grip or butt weight change should be ignored.   The swing weight scale and swing weight concept was never designed or intended to handle that kind of change.    So how the grip change might effect the head weight feel of the club is not going to be representative of how the swing weight scale readings change.

It's really more of a club static weight change than a head weight change but bottom line is that everyone is different in how the feel will change.  Most can ignore it but the only way to know for sure is to give it a try and see how it effects the feel for you.

And if it does change the feel in a negative way,  DONT use the swing weight scale to try and fix it.   Take the mid-iron and get some lead tape and play around with adding weight to the head incrementally (on the range while hitting balls) until you get the desired feel and results.  Then you can put the club back on the swing weight scale.  That will give you a new target value you can use for the rest of the set.

First, I realize that a SW scale can be “fooled” by weight of a grip change and the scale was not intended to be used that way, but a hypothetical question:

Let’s say someone orders new irons through a manufacturer with 52g standard size grips @D2.  When they receive the irons, the irons mistakenly came with 65g midsize grips but swing-weights @D2 as ordered.

I have to assume that the manufacturer used a heavier tip weight to achieve D2 with the heavier grip than standard?  4-6 grams(??) heavier than what would’ve been used if they used a standard grip as ordered?

So, if you received new irons with this “mistake” of wrong grips (midsize) @D2, would you simply replace the grips to standard, now making it @D4-ish or have them rebuilt?

It's certainly possible but I wouldn't assume it.   As I understand it, more often than not the factories who add tip weights and manage head weights commonly do it before the grips are installed.   It might be coincidence, it might have to do with the shaft or playing length ordered.    But it's hard to say for sure as every manufacturer does things differently and is not always open about the manufacturing process.

First of all, there is nothing magic about stock swing weights.   They are chosen based on what tends to work well for the largest percentage of buyers.  And different individuals have very different sensitivities to the swing weight as it changes.   So unless you've already done a bunch of testing with your swing and that length and that shaft and the desired grip - and you KNOW that D4 with that combination is a poor fit - then I'd generally recommend just going out and seeing how they feel and perform before considering doing anything else.

But to be honest, if I got the wrong size grip, I'd likely either send them back - or have them send me the new grips for me to install myself.  I wouldn't put out the $$ to buy the correct size grips.

IF the heavier swing weight does turn out to be a problem then I might consider rebuilding them myself.  But not all OEM's use common tip weights to manage head weight so some are easier to deal with locally than others.   The harder ones I'd probably send back.   If I didn't have the skills to do it, then the only option I'd consider with new clubs is sending them back.    Yes I know that can take longer but the wait is usually worth it to have it done right.
