Wedges Tearing Up Ball Covers!

my cleveland 588 rtg's have been rusting a little more recently, and i've noticed at the range that everytime i made contact, it leaves some white material from the ball on it. i haven't noticed this as much on the course, but does anyone experience this and should this be happening? i don't want to have to change balls every couple holes because my favorite wedge has scuffed up the cover.

I notice the scuffing too on mine as well. If not a scuff lines indinted on the ball and I play Nike but I can too anything with that wedge and I can't give it up.

Yeah, that's the way it goes. On the course I tear up anything softer than a Top Rock. I can't really hit a full wedge with a ProV. If I do, it's nearly unplayable. At the range, my grooves fill with white peices of the ball after a shot or two.

 

I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one with this 'problem'.

guys..that's 100% the norm for range rocks...I dont expect anything different...

This happens to me to. But it happens with everything below a 7 iron some times. I used a B330 today hit a full 8 iron and when I got up to the ball it had shred marks all of where I hit it. It's good because I can make my shots stop but man I go through alot of balls. DAMN YOU KZG :tongue:

I don't think balls hold up as well in the cold weather either. That might be the cause? Not positive though.

That's surprising because the Y Cutters were supposedly high spinning wedges without the ball shear that you would normally notice from other tour grooved wedges. I only noticed the shearing when I used cheaper balls, but with Pro V's and Nike One's, there was none. What balls are you using?

It ate up prov1 x and a little less on hx tour. hoping it wears down a little after getting broken in

That is the "new" order of things. (Especially if you have authentic TOUR equipment.) You can complain about tearing up balls, but for the TOUR player's, THAT is what the wedges are supposed to do! BITE! Create SPIN!! (Most of them change to new wedges for grooves every 3 to 6 months too!)

 

They need it because they play into parking lots for the firmness of their greens. For most here (at least the AMs that don't play much big-er time tournaments) all the play is at home clubs at "member" conditions. Really, you don't need to spin the balls that much! You probably don't play out of juicy 4" rough where you need the deep grooves to give the water and "junk" a place to go so you don't hit fliers.

 

Sorry to say that really the only way to try to stop the ball shear is to go and hit about 2 or 3 full shagbags of practice balls out of a bunker. This should wear in the grooves enough to just make groove lines on the balls and not shear them so bad that the balls get "furry".

 

It's just a catch 22. TOUR wedges will chew up ProV's and Callaways and NXT's about the same. So, it's up to you on what you want to use and spend.

 

Don't want to chew up balls, then get wedges with "V" grooves!!

Glad to know i'm not the only person this happens to. The season is pretty much over here in NJ, but we'll see what happens next year. If tearing up covers is what it takes to get solid contact, good spin, and closer to the pin, then I'm all for it.
