My Day at Maidstone.....

a classic golf course.....

I was recently able to play one of my favorite golf course I have ever been on. The Maidstone Club has a rich golf history and has been on the top 100 lists for along time. For those of you that have played it, it is a beautiful piece of golfing history and probably the most expensive piece of real estate in the country if not the world!....... :D The membership of the course is the ELITE of the country and have family names of GETTY, Rockafella,Ford Kennedy and Chase(as in the founder of chase bank)..There is no club that has the Bloodline of this place and it wants everyone to know it...
The day was cold but beautiful and sunny which made it so much better to see the beauty of the course, It is only around 6500 yards max , but the greens and blind shots make it true tester. They have not yardage markers except for the stones in the fairways and have no irrigation system for anything but the greens and tees, which i thought was different. I played pretty well +1, 3 bogeys and a eagle, but the putting surfaces have you guessing if you don't play there all the time. Maidstone is one of the great golf experiences in the US. Its one of the few true links like conditions of play we get here too. It has always been put in a sort of threesome with National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills as the places to play in eastern Long Island. Now however, I think Friars Head (for sure) in nerby Baiting Hollow and possibly even Sebonack have overtaken it at least as far as teh total quality of the golf course goes. I'd still never turn down an invitation to Maidstone for sure.

I have not played Friar's as everyone that has played it has said it was one of the best golf experiences ever, Sebonack I have played and it was Amazing and a killer test of golf.......

Aue - Find a member and get an invitation to Friars Head. Except for Sand Hills it might be the best course built since Prairie Dunes was finished. Think of a combination of Cypress Point dunes when it first opened, National GOlf Links of America for strategies and width and Pine Valley for greens contours and waste areas. It also has THE finest practice areas I have ever seen.
