Big Island Next Week

Trying to figure out when and where I will be playing next Wednesday-Friday while in staying in Waimea.  Anyone around and interested in playing?  Let me know.

Don't know if you know this but Waimea is much cooler than on the Kohala Coast.

I've played the following golf courses many times, Mauna Lani South and North (north is harder but the south has the ocean views), Mauna Kea, Hualalai (resort and private), Hapuna, Waikoloa Village, Waikoloa (two courses), Waikoloa Village golf.

In Waimea there's a great local Hawaiian food restaurant that serves huge portions including their awesome pancakes called Hawaiian Style Cafe.

On the way to or from Waimea you will see cactus growing in the fields on the side of the road.

thank you for the info.  Reading my post I don’t know why I wrote what I did, I’m staying on the Kohala Coast.  Considering all those courses.

Have a great time and my wife and I always stay on the Kohala Coast when on Hawaii Island

If you like Macadamia nuts visit the Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company in Kawaihae since you're staying on the Kohala Coast. They also have chocolates, coffee, etc.

You can walk around and see how they make everything including their delicious peanut brittle.

There's also a lunch wagon in Kawaihae that sells really good fish tacos.

I've been to the Big Island three times and have played 5 different places.  Just absolutely love the place.  This is my ranking of the courses I have played taking into account both the quality of the course and the value.

 

1) Mauna Lani South - Not too hard.  Gorgeous views.  I think the over the ocean par 3 here is better than Mauna Kea.

2) Hapuna - Can get a good price here.  Up the hill with sweeping views.  Re-grassed the greens a couple of years ago.  

3) Mauna Lani North - Tougher than South and a slightly different style.  Kiawe trees.  Goats!

4) Mauna Kea -  Gorgeous, but peaks early.  Outstanding customer service.  Really tough green complexes.  Too hard for my taste.

5) Makani -  Great value.  Lots of wildlife.  Turkeys!  Lacks in views compared to the other 4.  I haven't played since they completed some renovations.

 

Also, eat at Merriman's in Waimea.  Just do it.  And get malasadas at Tex Drive-in in Honokaa.  This is non-negotiable.
