Thoughts on swing? Most common miss is a fade / push. 7-ish handicap coming back after a long layoff

Recommended Posts

For background, I am probably something like a 5-7 handicap (though I haven't played enough in the last few years to have one).

I have never liked my takeaway, I think my arms get away from my body quickly (see below), although I am unsure how exactly that affects my swing. (see first two pictures below). It is far worse with my driver if you feel like torturing yourself by watching the attached video. It feels like I have two different swings sometimes, one for the driver and one for the shorter clubs.

My swing path has always been a bit of a mess, I used to come way inside->outside, hitting big draws (or pushes if I didn't turn it over), but I may have overcompensated at some point and now I feel I may be coming over the top.

To my untrained eye, my club also looks extremely shut at the top, but that leaves me wondering why my miss is consistently a fade or slice.  (see bottom picture). You can see the ball flight fairly well on the driver video, I made sure to attach it because it is the exact miss that kills me - big slice missing the fairway left.

I can add high-speed videos of a Driver and 6i later today if you think it is hard to get information from the videos provided - thanks so much!

Can't really see your ball position without a face on. It looks as if your alignment is crossed up. Your left arm is way on top of the right. (Open shoulders to target line) You can get away with it with shorter clubs, but as the clubs get longer it's slice city.  Feel like you're closing the shoulders more at setup.

Super helpful advice, thanks! I'll see if I can get a head-on video next time I'm out. In the meantime I really appreciate the feedback.

Man everyone is single digit handicaps around here. I don’t see any power or proper sync in the swing?!? Am I missing something?

re: Power, you probably don't see it because there isn't a ton haha. Driving average this year is 251 yards. Never been a long player at all.

Unsure exactly what you mean on the sync bit, but I am happy to hear out any critiques if you wanna elaborate!

Your ball position off your lead foot is fine. You're too wide with a 5 iron which makes it look too far forward. That should be your driver stance. As far as the push is concerned you have too much lower body slide happening. I believe the slide is a compensation for the too wide of stance to get the divot in front to hit the ball properly causing the ball to start too far left. 1. Narrow it up. 2. You're going to have to feel the pressure staying your back foot much longer in the downswing.
