club for the range

Recommended Posts

My son and i have started to take up the game(we bought clubs , have been going to the range and have some lessons lined up). Although my wife doesn't have the same interest as us she has expressed interest in joining us at the range once in awhile and maybe at a chip n putt in the summer.

I would like to get her a club of her own to take to the range and i was looking for a suggestion on what club to get. I know there are places where i can get individual clubs so my question is what club is the easiest to hit?

Since i'm a beginner i'm not really sure. At first i was thinking maybe 7 iron but maybe a 3 or 4 hybrid may be easier.

Does your range have loaner clubs? Many do. Grab a few different ones and see which she likes.

If you are going to buy her a club, many manufacturers are now offering iron sets with hybrid-type irons all the way through the set. For example, the Cleveland Hi-Bore irons:

Or the Cobra Women's Transition S irons:

tough question.

if you want her to like the game, you have to make it fun and have her be successful right away. it's so easy to get frustrated and give it up for good. wait until you see the look on her face the first time she hits a solid shot airborne and over 50 yards. It's priceless, i promise you.

good advice above, have her try a few loaner clubs, woods, irons, 7,8,9,PW usually safer bets. Try to make sure they have cavities (hollow backs) and try to make sure they don't look like they belong in a museum (rusty, beat up, cracked leather grips). golf is so mental, so if you have a pretty club it's easier to imagine a positive outcome from swinging it, rather than an ugly club.

good luck. i think it's great you're getting your wife involved.

man, you are lucky. i can't get my wife to the range for love or money (i've tried the first, don't have the latter), and this from a woman who parred the hardest par 5 she has ever played: dogleg, downhill, OB and woods everywhere, creek fronting the green-- she hit a good drive, laid it up nicely, and hit 7 iron right over the flag from 120, 2 putted and shouted "I love this game." she hasn't played since. curious thing, that.

i would say get her an 8 iron with a women's flex graphite shaft. or surprise here with that and a hybrid with a graphite shaft as well (5 hybrid). if she ever wants a set of clubs, she will want to keep the hybrid anyway.

loaner clubs are a good idea, but they are pretty much always steel shafted, and if she is new to golf, she should be hitting a graphite shafted club, IMO.

Range is boring for women, if they had not played before.

How to make if fun for your wife is the key questions. Trick is not to make them ( wife and the kids ) feel it was forced upon them.

We all know if she's found the game as we do, there is no stopping her going to the golf course.

I started my wife with a female instructor ( kind of female thing that she did not like to look bad in front of a male teacher ), she took a few basic lessons for the set up and the swing, practiced a few times and before I think she's totally ready; I took her to a par 3 course ( early in the morning with few golfers ) no kids just had fun with the wife. Teed up most of the shots in the fairway to get the best lie possible.

She really enjoyed that experience and love golf now.

I would seek out a good instructor for her to get it going, by the time the weather is warm, take her out to a short par 3 course and have some fun, soon you won't see her often because she'll be joining local woman's club to play with the gals.

I got her some nike slingshots 6, 8, W, taylormade miscela 4 hybrid and an adams rpm dual driver, titleist sunday bag and regripped them for about $160. She gets on me to go to the range somedays. She loves them and it is much better than her asking me if she has to watch me hit another bucket of balls. Oh ya all from globalgolf.com

Well, I've been there and done that.

After years of only playing 2 to 3 times a year (if that,) I got semi serious about my game again about 3 years ago. I was going to a heated driving range during the winter and playing a full 18 at least once a week late spring through fall. The wife and I are best friends so she was at least willing to give it a try in order to spend more time together. Now I wasn't going to go out and buy her a full set of clubs to see if she would enjoy this or not, so I made her a 7 iron and a 5 wood to try out. Long story short is that she is never going to enjoy playing as much as I do, but she does enjoy going to the range with me occasionaly, and does play several rounds of golf with me each season. And, we have fun doing it together!

Keys to success...

1. A 7 iron and a 5 wood or hybrid are good clubs to start with. Make sure that they are easy to hit models. You don't need to spend big bucks, but do get a 7 iron with a cavity back in a game improvement style iron. Make sure the clubs have a ladies flex shaft in them and are not way to long for her.

2. Take her to the range to start. Do not be in a big hurry to get her out on a course.

3. Do not try to coach her yourself. Answer her questions if any and leave her alone.

4. If she wants coaching find an instructor or a better player (female if possible) to help her.

5. It needs to be fun! Make sure you don't take the fun out of it for her by critisizing or giving unsolicitaed advice.

6. See how it goes and build from there.

I had a real advantage in that I do club building so I could get her fit properly for the 2 clubs she started with without spending a lot of money. I would be happy to help you out if you like, and you are welcome to PM me.

Best of Luck!

Tim
