Folks with ASTIGMATISM (or bad eyesight in one eye)...

Hey all,

I'm a bad putter. There, I said it. LOL And whereas I'm not going to make excuses for it (I don't practice it nearly enough), I'm sure my eyesight doesn't help with my alignment.

I've got astigmatism in my right eye. I play golf as a righty. When I get over the ball, I lack some perspective since the sight from my right eye is blurry. My LEFT eye is perfect, and so I know that my left eye is dominant in my appraisal of greens and in my alignment. What I DON'T know is if I'd be better off with certain type of putter (mallet vs. blade, line/dot/two-ball aid, etc.), or simply more practice.

I noticed on a recent golf trip (where my putting was pretty bad) that I missed most of my putts to the right (pushed). This might simply be a stroke issue, or I might have the ball/putter aligned to the right more often than not.

Over the last 4 years, I have alternated (and more more than twice a season) between a SC Studio and an Od. 2-ball (I want to say it's a DF, with a black insert in a black mallet design. It's NOT a white-hot -- it's older). I have had more confidence -- especially with longer distance lag putting -- with the 2-ball. But I don't know if I align it well.

Incidentally, I always align the line on my ball to the line I want to putt on. This takes some of the illusion out of the putt when I get over the ball, I think.

Anyway, I'm wondering your thoughts on whether my eyesight might have any correlation to a KIND of putter being better than another. Anything else you might like to share on the topic would be appreciated.

I wear contacts esp. for the astigmatism in my left eye. I don't think that I choose my putters based on this, though I may do it subconsciously. Maybe a new pitch for Nike putters :tongue:

I would go see an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist and get the proper contact lenses or glasses for your problem. That should help. They can actually insert a lens now that correct astigmatisms, almost like a Lasik procedure. Of course, do the proper checking before getting Lasik done by just anyone for your own safety!

 

Are you sure it is just an astigmatism?

Thanks, Eric. Yep, was diagnosed at a very young age. Wore an eye patch and glasses to strengthen the eye at a young age... Wore a contact lens through high school... Got to the point where the eye was better but not able to be strengthened anymore -- and since a contact lens/glasses can't "correct" the vision in that eye, I don't wear anything in/on it. I rely on my left eye.

 

I visit to Opt yearly. I'm considering corrective surgery, but, who knows. I've made it this far with this sight, so I don't know.

 

It's amazing how I don't consider my eyesight effectiveness on a daily basis until it comes to golf. I'm sure that front-to-back ball position is affected, as well as general alignment over the ball. That's why I rely heavily on lining up the line on the ball for putting, and picking a spot infront of the ball to create a target line for irons/driver.

 

I may simply need to work on my putting a whole lot more! LOL

That must be one hell of an astigmatism because most of the time glasses will help out a great deal or you could get googles and look like the guy from the Chicago Bulls (I forgot his name) on the golf course. How cool would that be????

Your goggles idea sounds good. I just need to make sure I get some that make the hole look a lot bigger! haha
