Help with new wedge gapping, please?

Recommended Posts

I’ve played the original CBX wedges (54 & 58) for a while now and want to replace them with something new.

I bought irons less than two months ago that are very strongly lofted, my AW is 46*. IIt is my 100 yard club now, and my 54 goes about 75-80 yards. I love the set 46* AW but it’s opened a can of worms as far as the rest of my wedge setup goes.

I ordered a CBX Zipcore 52* with a Rotex shaft in hopes of getting about 85-90 yards. That’s fine, but I’m undecided whether to go RTX 56-10 or 58-6 with my other wedge. I’ve never played a setup with 6* separation (46,52,58) but it’s intriguing. The problem with that is I’d probably be using the 58* mostly out of bunkers.

My question is, would it be smarter for a decent senior player (12 cap) to go with a 56 rather than the 58 (I would use the 56 a lot more on full swings than the 58, but I love the low bounce LW out of our hard packed bunkers. I can’t remember the last time I bagged a 56).

I’m also open to ditching the CBX 52* and going RTX 54-10 and 58-6 and maybe getting the 54* delofted?

Any and all advice will be appreciated.

Just my experience..

For decades, I carried the two additional 52/58 wedge setup. That was until I went to the Titleist Mecca and was shown what an advantage a “real” sand wedge could be. Strokes fall from your card like leaves.

Then we began to see what I call Covid bunkers. As you are experiencing, these were normal bunkers that no longer receive adequate maintenance. The top inch looks like sand, but the bulk material is similar to partially set concrete. In this case, a true sand wedge is typically a disaster.

If you’re not/can’t use a “real” sand wedge, you need both as much loft as you can get, since you’re now hitting more of a lob than a sand explosion, combined with a multipurpose lowish bounce grind. IMO about the best is the Vokey M in 58.

On the other end, grooving a -10 yard shot with your gap wedge is a far better solution to moving its loft further away from your remaining wedge. You will also need this to close the gap between your 52 and 58 degree wedges anyway.

I'd suggest getting the wedges with lofts and bounces that are different than what you now have and keeping what you have (ie get that 56 but keep the 58 too).  That way you can always go back if needed.  I spent too much on trading wedges around in the last few years.  My solution is to only add and not trade or sell unless the club just doesn't work for me.  Too many times I've regretted trading something that worked for me.

What I'm getting at is keep what works just in case the new stuff doesn't work.  Maybe you already do that, it's something that took me awhile to realize.

I’ve been thinking long and hard about this since I started this thread, and I think I know what I’m going to do. Thanks for the great advice, and yes, I’ve regretted trading a club for relatively nothing many times.
I didn’t mention it in the thread, but a few weeks ago I was in a PGASS and asked about the trade in value for the CBX wedges, and it was $16 apiece. 😂 so, yes I’m definitely going to keep them.

One other thing, by using gift certificates I’d been saving, the 3 new wedges only cost me a total of $130, so I’m thinking of trying them all?

I can play the 52* CBX and RTX 56* for 90 days of playability and the RTX 58-6 (which I’m really curious to try as it’s a blade, and has 4* less bounce than my old CBX 58-10) for 30 days.

Worst case scenario is I return what i don’t like under playability, and get back more gift certificates! 😂
