3 handicap struggling with stalling in downswing

Recommended Posts

Hello all as the title says I'm struggling with a stalling problems leading to a flip through impact and more of a cast with the arms. It looks like mabye I have a little to much hip slide that may contribute to the stall. Just looking for some advice here before resorting to a swing coach.

Misses are hooks or a push most of the time, with some issues controlling low point of the swing. I have found if I reduce swing power to 60% or so I don't loose much distance and am able to control the swing enough to get by. But I know I need to fix the issues at hand to start playing good again.

Any drills that could help with this would be appreciated. Thank you all!

I have a similar problem. I would simply work on taking your lower body out of the swing. You have a great backswing and good downswing path, but your lower body slides ahead too fast in the downswing, forcing a lot of wrist action and extension at impact. Notice how you lose all lag at p6 and do a little jump and flip near impact. Its called the Monte 6/9 ballerina move.

I like the flamingo drill, right foot back. It takes your lower body out of the equation and forces you to increase your hand speed without going OTT. You still want that lateral shift in transition towards the target, but i would also work instead of sliding putting pressure on your lead foot to start the downswing.

Some coaches might teach a sitting in transition drill but i find that hard to time.

Wow thanks for the reply! I tried the flamingo drill on the range this morning and definitely my FEEL is the lead leg moving almost entirely backwards as I rotate through. Much different then the sliding feeling.

I have also tried the sitting motion to avoid the slide as well and found it just not in my swing style and struggled with low point control for a long time with it before giving up.

I noticed on camera when doing the flamingo drill my hip rotation is much better through impact, much less slide but my upper body still tends to stall out and stay closed. Do you think I should work on also feeling like my shoulders open up more in the downswing during this drill. Obviously I don't want to spin them open right off the bat but maybe feel my club shaft exiting more left through impact? I think it's a drill I will add to my practice routine currently it seems very helpful. Thank you again!

Yea, i find that too. I have to work less gard to get the hips open if i focus on arm speed and path. Especially players who started young, they already have an active lower body. Better players tend to slide, so its not a big issue, but it can create low point issues.

Yes, if you work on finishing the arms left, your shoulders should be more open at impact. The problem for sliders is we are used to stopping the shoulder rotation. Just keep working the arms and hands padst your body and left exit. Your shoulders should naturally rotate if you are returning the arms and hands in front of your chest near impact. Stick with the flamingo drill.

You can look at my progress here.
