Superspeed Golf Training System Question

Recommended Posts

I am considering purchasing this and have a question. I am old (DOB 1949) and have some shoulder issues which limit how many swings I can take in a short period. And the Superspeed protocol seems to involve not that many swings as I understand it. The protocol also has you repeat all the swings from the opposite side and this is the genesis of my question.

The osteoarthritis (and probable soft tissue issues as well) in my left shoulder really inhibits my ability to make hard swings from the opposite side (I am right handed). Is this simply about balancing the development of both sides equally just on general principles, or is there something going on here where your ability to swing faster from your dominant side requires serious non-dominant side efforts? If it is the latter then that would be a problem in my case.

Thanks.

I can only speak anecdotally from my own experience. I've been working out and using the speed sticks for about 8 months now. I'm 47 and have no problems with shoulders.

I don't keep track of speeds except for at the end with the green stick. I use the opposite handed swings more for strectch of the torso than speed.

They've worked for me. I've also gained muscle and dropped almost 10lbs. that helped too. I went from 97-98 to 105-106 driver speed since last year.

I do not do any swings from the opposite side.  I understand the reasoning and it makes sense but I do a lot of gym work in which I do train both sides of the body... trunk rotations, cable rotations, and anti-rotational exercises.  Therefore I'm pretty confident that I don't need the opposing swings.  If you do any weight training add some of those moves in and scrap the opposite side swings.  I do add 2 extra reps per set for my dominant swings just to make sure I'm getting the same amount of reps.  I also do kneeling swings for arm speed.

If you are only swinging from one side , the beginner program is 21 swings.

Plus any swings you do with your driver before or after to measure progress.

@DaveLeeNC

I have been doing speed training of some sort since the late 80s when I was advised to train by swinging a wood handled broom really hard by a teaching pro.  I started doing overspeed with light weight trainers in the early 2000s.  At this time I have homemade speed sticks that I swing pretty much every other day.  I swing as much as I feel like and I don't follow anyone's protocol and I can still get my driver up to ~105mph when I am warmed up so I guess that what I do works fine.

My opinion is that you just need to swing something fast and Hogan's method of making 10 swings as fast as possible with the driver at the end of the day is probably as good as anything.  So, my advice is to listen to your body and figure out what works and does not hurt.  I am 68 years old and not getting injured is top priority for me LOL!
