What courses to play ?

I am making my first trip to Pinehurst. I looking for some recomendations on which courses to play. I have 5 rounds to play. I will be playing No. 2 on my last day. I know I want to play 8 but what others should I try and why?

#4 is a MUST. Tom Fazio did the renovation and it quickly became my fave at Pinehurst. Great bunkering and much less frustrating than #2 (you'll know what I mean when you hit 11 greens and stay on 2!) yet equally beautiful. #8 is a great choice as well. For a fourth, #7 is popular with the staff there.

 

#1 just reopened but along with #3 is fairly short (would be great with Hickory). 5 and 6 are very average.

 

That said...if I have a chance to play all 8 course again in 4 1/2 days as I have in the past...I will jump on it!

 

Enjoy and I hope you are staying at the Carolina for an extra treat. Also leave time to wander the clubhouse/pro shops and make use of the great practice facility.

 

Do it right with a caddy on #2...it's worth it.

Most people that live in NC usually drive to Pinehurst to play the other amazing courses like Tobacco Road, Pine Needles, Talamore, and the countless others that are expensive...but still not as expensive as the Pinehurst courses. Consider giving some of them a look.

obviously number 2... number 8 is great the US Am will be there this year... number 4 is a great course... i havent played any of the others though

Highland Hills

Longleaf

 

I don't recommend Highland or Longleaf.. Just not much difference than the courses I play in Central Pa.

 

I still need to play many more courses down there. Good thing my job requires me to go TDY to Ft. Bragg and Pope AFB. :)

No. 2 is a hoot. Don't expect to play good there. Hitting a green is an impossible task some days. I remember playing there one time before the improvements and a guy I was playing with putted his ball into an unplayable lie! Hit a bank, went off the green, up against a tree! And that was the second hole!

I have not played 8 or the redone 4. Old 4 was very nice. I very much like 6 and don't like 7. Avoid 5 and 1.

If you can, go play MidSouth and The National. Pine Needles is so, so nice. Pure golf there.

Take a caddy on 2. Riding is a hassle there anyway. You will love your time in Pinehurst. Be sure to go to the Pinecrest for a drink or six.

Mid Pines, Pineneedles and Tobacco Road are a MUST!

#4 is awesome. It's a course you could play every day and never get tired of it. It has a great combination of holes, especially the par trees--they are beautiful and solid holes. Walking up the 18th with the front of the clubhouse in the distance is pretty cool as well. Personally, I would choose #4 over #2 any day of the week. A good watering hole is the Irish pub in the Village of Pinehurst; the bar in the cellar is cool.

I thought #6, 7 and 8 were all excellent! I would certainly go back to play those again. They wind through housing developments but there is not a flat lie on any of those courses. All really solid courses. #2 is awesome but I enjoyed 6, 7 and 8 just as much.

2,4,8 I played all 3 in two days this past summer. You will love it. It was like Disney for golf. Played 8 and only saw one other group all round.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I have tee times on 2,6,7 and 8. four is getting punched the week I am there so that made my mind up for me. I am playing early morning I want to leave plenty of time for the irish pub.
