Ventus TR Red 6X Vs 7X for Driver? Tipping?

JohnnyHangs

Recommended Posts

Looking for some insight - I currently play a Ventus TR blue 6X playing at 44.5 in a TD head, and am looking to make a change to Red TR.

I recently picked up an Apex UW 17 with a TR Red 8X, and it's now my favorite club in the bag - Takes the left side out of play which I prefer and I would like to match the profile/weight in my driver as best possible.

My Tempo fit well to the GT 70TX in the past, so I'm thinking I will move into a Red TR 7X instead of a 6X. I'd like to match the profile of the Red 8X as much as possible, so does anyone have insight to whether it needs to be tipped at all? The red tip/butt profiles of the 7/8X seem a bit different from each other on the website.

Thanks in advance

Believe its no tipping, but I'll be able to double check tomorrow

Even if it’s tipped 1/2”, I wouldn’t tip the driver shaft if you’re going for the same feel.

Surprisingly the 8x is actually tipped 2 inches from what I can tell (Velecore E to the hosel). Maybe that's whats stiffening it up a bit?

It feels solid which I like, but I wouldn't get a driver tipped that much, not sure if the 7x even needs it for driver?

Granted the 8X shaft is in an apex UW, so I'm not sure if the club/hosel takes more shaft than a callaway driver adapter?

So I play a TR Red 6X, tipped a half inch, in the 3D.
I came from an OG Black 7X, untipped,

although not in that head.

I did worry that the 6X might feel light.

It doesn’t, at least to me - bear in mind it’s essentially a 70 gram shaft in any event, although I do play it at 45,75.
I also play an OG Red 8X in a UW, which I also love.
YMMV, but I think you’ll find the 6X in driver is plenty stout, especially if you tip it. It’s far far from a noodle and unless you need a really heavy driver shaft, I’d recommend giving the 6X a spin.

This is helpful, thanks.

I used to play the black 6X and liked the stability, but I wanted more feel. I currently play the Blue TR 6X untapped, but I think it's still a bit soft and can get too much left out of it.

I seem to get better tempo out of heavier shafts - Granted I play at 44.5, so maybe the 7X brings it more in line with a 6X playing 1.25 longer?

That makes sense to me - if you like the heavy weight, stick with it.
for what it’s worth, I’ve hit TR Blue in 6X and 7X quite a bit. TR Red, for me, is far crisper, and easier to control (but I’ve a quick transition, so the stiffer butt in TR Red is my friend). They are such an impressive family of shafts!

Yea the handle in the red is what's needed for my swing as well. Do you think tipping 1/2 gets the job done, or would you recommend going a full inch? It seems like my 8X is tipped quite a bit for my utility wood and I like the feel.

Your headweight on the UW will be plenty more than your driver so more tipping makes sense with that club. I personally wouldn’t overtip it in a driver - The TR Red X in my view is plenty tip stiff in a driver

I dont think the TR Red is an anti-left profile.

I don't think any profile is anti-anything to be honest lol.

I just draw my TR blue far more than the TR red I have - Something about the profile of the red is better for my delivery at the moment. TR Black seems better as well, I just don't like the feel when I'm not swinging 100%.

Do you feel like you 1/2 is too much? It looks like on Fuji's site the Blue and red TR's have virtually the same tip stiffness, the blue barely edging it out actually. I don't think the blue is that stiff in the tip.

No, I’m very happy with the 1/2.

I actually think - for me - the Blue gives a sensation of bring softer in the tip because of the softer mid and butt section, rather than the tip itself being soft. Others may disagree!

Interesting. I have about 10-12G's of additional weights in the paradym td, so that makes it deflect a bit more I think and feels soft.

I've learned I need the stiff handle - Easy to go down the rabbit hole lol

I find it unlikely that the 8X is tipped 2”, but it’s definitely possible. Post a pic with a tape measure next to it.

My bags at the local five iron by me, so I'll be able to tomorrow. I used the measuring app today and it came out to roughly .5-.75 inches from the end of the last E to the ferrule.
