Burner 2 iron upgrade

Recommended Posts

I play off handicap of 7

iv had burner 2 irons for about 12 years

snapped the 7 iron years ago replaced with a m2. Now Iv broken the 6 iron it feels like it’s time for a full new set

i like taylormade and am considering p790 and stealth irons

any thoughts on which would be the logical upgrade?

Has technology moved on much to the point I’d notice much of an improvement?

apart from lofts getting ever stronger so a 7 iron may fly as far as an old 6 iron

any other contenders?

I upgraded from the ‘08 Burner irons to P770 Pw, 8i, 6i (I only carry seven clubs). I love the 770s. Look good, feel good, play great (for my game). I also have a P790 4i…but off the tee, when well struck in summertime, down in Fla, etc., I too often found the ball 230+ from home plate—which my 5w does more reliably; so I rarely carry that 4i.

While I never hit a P790 other than that 4i, I will say the low-spin blast off the center of the face was more reminiscent of the Burners (I hit that old 4i really well, and until recently (when I acquired a 5w and fell in love it), that old Burner 4i was my backup/short-par4 tee club), albeit in a smaller (but confidence-inspiring), more eye-pleasing (to me) package—P790 vs. Burner.

Whereas the P770s fly “truer”, like to like. Even accounting for the different lengths/lofts between Burners and P770s, my current 6i is a very consistent club; I get the yardage I expect always (when well-struck). My Burner 6i could be +15-20 yds long seemingly out of nowhere (with the caveats being: they were well-used, and maybe the grooves were worn down; I was younger, and dumber, and swung out of my shoes way too much; I’m into 35g-heavier shafts now, which are a way better fit, and I have mid-size grips now, which are a better fit…etc.).

Whatever. I love the P770’s. In hindsight, I would have got a P770 4i as well. I love their size, shape, look, feel…; I find them forgiving (whatever that means), I find them reliable, I find them a lot of FUN to play. (Now, the Burners look way too clunky and cumbersome to me, and feel unwieldy (which could also be (re: probably definitely is!) due to such different shaft weights!). I don’t see myself considering new irons for another ten years or more (other than perhaps a P770 4i to replace that P790 4i…). Never held or even thought about the Stealths (based on looks), so can’t help there.

When it comes down to it, get them in your hands, whichever, and go with what looks and feels best to you…! And definitely hit them. The foam-filled hollow bodies feel different when struck (if you’ve never hit them). Not better, not worse; just different. So see if they fill good to you!

But definitely keep in mind: TM changed their club-length measurement-points; and so now, compared to my old ‘08 Burner irons, TM’s stock lengths are .5 inches SHORT. Meaning, my stock 36.5” Burner 8i is half an inch LONGER than my stock 36.5” P770 8i. I ordered my P770 Pw +.75”—to stock P770 8i-length. I have a 48* specialty wedge (from another company) which is a 36” playing length. That 36” 48*, my P770 PW (at TM’s current 36.5”) and P770 8i (at TM’s current  36.5”) are all three THE EXACT SAME LENGTH, however you measure them; all three are half an inch shorter than my Burner 8i, stock at TM’s THEN-36.5”….So…

Jeez. I hope something, somewhere in all that, helps!

Good luck, have fun, hit ‘em straight!

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
