True Spec Fitting

Recommended Posts

very good question, there are bad rangeballs and there are good rangeballs... if the range ball is a good one and the condition of the balls is the same for all the measured shots, the result will be comparable. and this is the only thing you need, compare different clubheads / shafts. If the range ball is producing some different (different from your gamer) spin rates / launch angle / smash, it is the same that you will have, if you use different balls (maybe lost balls, lake balls... you get me)

if your goal is the see the differences of the clubhead / shafts with A CERTAIN ball, you have to bring this ball. and in this case, I would recon go indoor and hope for a bay with some distance to the screen, to still have a small visualisation of the ball flight

I would prefer outdoor (if the range balls are good)

Outdoor is always best if you are hitting from turf that resembles what you play on.  I refuse to pay for a fitting that is on mats because there is no way to determine turf interaction and with irons, nothing (other than lie angle) is more important.

At the facility in Bend they use Pronghorn’s “range balls”. They are Taylor Made “Practice” balls and they work quite well. I doubt any TS facility is using old/yellow/crap balls.

The right answer probably depends as much on you as anything else. Some are sensitive to turf interaction and some aren't, and for me as long as the iron is roughly within the same category of iron I can't tell a whole lot of difference.

Do you play the same ball all the time or do you just grab whatever's handy or on sale? If you have a specific ball you play, and you do that because of how it performs, getting fit with that ball is critical IMO. Even a great range ball will spin different, launch different, feel different, etc. but if that's not important to you then who cares. For me, if I had to choose between turf or my ball, I'm choosing my ball every time and have no problem getting fit for irons off a mat. Not all turf is the same, and even different conditions will make it play differently, but for the most part my ball is going to play the same no matter where I am.

If it's something that's bothering you maybe you could get fit off a mat with your specific ball then hit it off turf as well just to be sure. Not all fitters are setup to accommodate that but many are.

if you are super sensitive to wanting to know your spin numbers, use your ball.  Note:  tees , turf/soil conditions , and mats can all move the spin numbers.

your best option:  get an indoor fitting , try that indoor result on a range , try the range result on a course.  best to use glued heads.  fitting heads are ok to get a ballpark, and buying a few clubs from ebay is a good place to get glued heads if you have no other options.

also, don't forget to have fun doing it!

Tell me more. Thinking about using them here in ATL. I had a bad experience with CC. Not sure PGA SS Studio would be worth a driver fitting. Like to know more about True Spec.

My experience based on Tried True Spec in Liberal National GC location. I previously tried PGA SS in NYC (they partnered with Five Iron) and CC in NYC.

TLDR: PGA SS in NYC > CC >>> True Spec

For True Spec:

Pros:

  • Selection (4.5/5): The variety of heads and shafts was impressive, particularly the selection of high-end shafts. However, I was surprised by the absence of Mizuno whole woods product lines, and Tour AD shafts, except for a house brand shaft developed in collaboration with Tour AD.
  • Knowledge (4/5): Overall good. Made some mistakes on product specs, like they are so sure that MP 241 is more forgiving than 243 than 245.

Cons:

  • Communication: My overall rating is influenced by the fitting experience, which was compromised by a lack of patience and pushiness regarding their products.

Overall:

  • I give this place 3 stars. However, having been to other stores for fittings in New York and New Jersey, some of which are cheaper and some pricier, I honestly feel all of them deserve 4.5 to 5 stars. This means they all dominate this place...

Might have to give my store a go here in GA. Much cheaper for a driver fitting too. I’ll peek in and look at their shaft selections when I am there next time. Thanks for the help.
